Mitosis vs Meiosis
The differences between Mitosis and Meiosis
They both take place in different kinds of cells!
Mitosis occurs in the somatic cells of the body.
Meiosis occurs in the germ cells of the body.
Cell Division!
In Mitosis, the cells divide only once.
In Meiosis, the cell divides twice.
More Differences Between Mitosis and Meiosis!
Crossing Over
In Mitosis, the two chromatids of a chromosome do not exchange segments during prophase. Meanwhile, in Meiosis, chromatids of two homologous pairs' chromosomes exchange segments during the process of crossing over.
Interphase
In Mitosis, Interphase occurs prior to each division. In Meiosis, it only occurs in Meiosis I, and does not occur prior to Meiosis II.
Prophase
During Mitosis, the duration of prophase is short, usually a few hours. In Meiosis, prophase is longer and may take up to days.
Some Final Differences Between Mitosis and Meiosis
A Few Facts About The Differences!
- In Mitosis, the daughter cells are genetically identical, while in Meiosis they are not.
- In Mitosis, during Metaphase individual chromosomes line up along the equator. In Meiosis, pairs of chromosomes line up along the equator.
- Mitosis is asexual, while Meiosis is sexual.
