S.T.E.M. Project - Make a Rainbow Jar
This project requires quite a few supplies but most of them are probably things you already have in your pantry.
Materials:
- A tall, see-through container (such as a clean mason jar.)
- Honey
- Light corn syrup
- Dish soap (either blue like Dawn or green like Palmolive)
- Olive oil
- Rubbing alcohol
- Water
- Food coloring
- A dropper
The Science Behind It - The concept of density.
Pour in the honey, being sure to pour it into the middle of our container.
Next, pour in the corn syrup. (color it purple using the food coloring.) , being sure to pour it into the middle of our container.
The dish soap next, being sure to pour it into the middle of our container.
The regular water colored blue. (If you’re using blue dish soap, obviously color your water something different. Again, in the middle, in the middle!)
The olive oil goes in next. Also, recommended pouring a fairly thick layer of oil – it will come in handy for the next step.
Last but not least pour in the rubbing alcohol, colored red – that in itself is a cool peek at different densities because the food coloring just sits at the bottom of the alcohol when you first drop it in.
BUT WAIT! DON’T POUR IT IN THE MIDDLE!
This is where the dropper comes in. If you pour the alcohol straight in, it’ll probably pick up the blue food coloring you used in the water and your rainbow will be ruined.
The best way to add it is by dropping the alcohol along the side of the container using a dropper. The key was not “breaking through” the oil layer into the blue water layer beneath it – that’s why it's suggested putting a thick layer of oil.
Hold it up carefully to the light, making sure not to shake it, and admired our beautiful creation.

Eating Healthy - Cholesterol, The "Good", The "Bad" and The "Ugly"
Cholesterol is a waxy like substance that comes from either your body or the foods that you eat. Your liver makes cholesterol and circulates it throughout the blood. Dietary cholesterol comes from foods that are deriving from animal sources such as meat, poultry, and full-fat dairy products.
There are two types of cholesterol, the “good” and the “bad.” Too much of one type or not enough of another can put you at risk for coronary heart disease. Excess cholesterol can cause plaque build-up between layers of the artery walls. Making healthy eating choices are important first steps to improving your cholesterol.
Good Fats: Mono and Poly-unsaturated Fats
These fats can lower bad cholesterol levels, reduce the risk for heart disease and stroke as well as provide the body with essential fats that your body can not produce itself. Sources of this fat are plant-based and fatty fish. Oils such as canola, olive, peanut, safflower, sesame and fatty fish such as tuna, herring, lake trout, mackerel, salmon, and sardines are a few examples. Nuts and Seeds such as flaxseed, sunflower seeds, and walnuts are also great sources.
Bad Fats: Saturated Fats?
These fats can raise bad cholesterol levels and lower the good cholesterol levels. These fats may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. These fats should be limited. Most saturated fats come from animal sources such as beef, pork and chicken fat, whole milk cheeses, and from tropical oils like coconut, palm kernel and palm oils.
Ugly Fats: Hydrogenated Oils and Trans Fats?
These kinds of fats are horrible for cholesterol levels and they can also increase the risk for type 2 diabetes. Sources are usually processed foods made with partially hydrogenated oils such as fried foods, baked goods, fast foods, and stick margarine. These fats should be kept as low as possible.
