What Are We Learning This Week?
Science- Students will be reading further about chemical, physical and mechanical weathering. We will take notes on all three and watch videos of examples of all three. Next week, we will begin our erosion and deposition investigations using soil and stream tables.
Social Studies- The students have completed their "tours" of the Northeast Region. Along the way, we have answered three important questions: 1. Why is the NE the birthplace of the USA? 2. Why did factories begin in the NE? 3. What large cities are important to the NE? We will continue to discuss these questions by reading the "reading further" section in our text before we begin to define the key vocabulary.
Writing- Students are all in the rough draft stage of their narrative snowman stories. They are typing their draft and making small corrections along the way. However, we will be doing some major editing in sections. We will begin with the start of their story and continue with adding awesome adjectives and vivid verbs to enhance their stories.
Spelling- With the short week, we will not do spelling. We will continue to work on our DLR grammar packets this week.
Reading- We are heading into our last bend of our nonfiction reading unit. Students will get another storm/natural disaster to research, but we will be pushing student thinking by getting groups to compare and contrast, finding main idea of their nonfiction books, and using book details to support their ideas.
I have given the students a new January log before the winter break, so that they can fill out the snowman for this month. That will be due on Monday, February 3.
Don't forget that the Pine Tree program is going on right now. West Bloomfield Schools has teamed up with the West Bloomfield Public Library to generate a list of books that are wonderful. Students can get books here at school or the public library. When they finish a book, they are to go onto the Sheiko Website to access the Pine Tree link. Then, they fill out a Google Form being logged in using their Google account. Once they read 3 books, 6 books, and 9 books, they can fill out a level sheet to earn prizes. Please encourage this great reading opportunity at home.
