Week of January 1 - January 3, 2020
Hello Sachems! Welcome Back!
Happy New Year! I am so hoping that you had a wonderful holiday break and you were able to spend some quality time with your family and friends. Also, I hope you had a chance to unwind and disconnect and allow yourself to reflect on the past year and prepare for a new one. The start of something new can be the start of something great. I wish 2020 to be the very best for you in the new year.
This vacation put a great deal into perspective for me and how precious each and every moment is in our lives. Over the vacation week, I spent the majority of the time in Louisiana visiting my mother and family. It was so good to get away and disconnect for few days. This has been a very hard year for my family with the loss of my father in February. This holiday was about "just getting through it".
However, one experience can truly change a mindset. This experience happened to my family on Sunday, December 22, 2019. My mother and I were driving back to her home from a wonderful family dinner in Baton Rouge. On our drive home, we were involved in a horrific car accident. We were hit head-on by a truck who was hit by another car who ran a red light. It was terrifying. The accident happened so fast that we were unable to even react. It was this moment as I crawled out of the car to get to my mother to be sure she was alright not knowing what was to come. Wonderful people rushed to our car to help and the fire department was able to get my mother out of the car. With an ambulance ride to the emergency room and after many hours of tests and assessments, we were released to go home. Sore and bruised...it could have been so much worse. The Sheriff's Department made it clear that we were both very lucky and someone was watching over us in that moment. Our holiday took a turn from "getting through it" to enjoying every moment.
I share this story with you as we are a family. I hope you never take moments for granted and cherish the time you have with your family and friends. This horrible experience made me realize that I must get rid of challenges that take up space in my mind. I want to live in the moment and ensure to always be kind and to pay it forward. To each of you....I hope this year will be full of wonderful moments to cherish. Let go of the challenges..forgive...forget and focus on being kind and always remaining grateful for all that you have.
I have thought of our school family a lot this week and feel confident that 2020 will be an incredible year for you and our school. I am so thankful that someone was watching over me that evening before the holiday as I can't wait to see you as we begin an incredible year for our school. Always remember that we are #SachemSTRONG.
Have a great start to 2020!
