Pioneer Post

Hello Pioneer Families and Happy Earth Week!
Spring is the air! With springtime comes a renewed sense of focus, a renewed joy, and the promise of sunshine and laughter. Everyone seems to smile a bit more, and steps are lighter as we round out the next few months together. This time of the year we start to plan for our end of the year events so please make note at the list of events at the bottom, and make sure to mark these dates, as well as any dates from your child(ren)'s teacher class newsletters, in your calendars.
As we progress towards the month of May, I want to take time out to thank all of our families for your diligence in having your child(ren) to school on time, and well-prepared for learning each day. This both supports and optimizes our instructional goals for each child, and aids us in helping your child be as successful as he or she can be. As we move closer to the end of the school year, please continue to encourage and champion your child's hard work and progress towards their academic goals and achievements. High standards and expectations are the foundation of our school. It is with pride that we hold these high standards, and ask each of our families to commit to maintaining the extraordinary record of achievement and contribution that has been the heart of Barnett Elementary. We are an exceptional learning community comprised of parents, teachers, students and administrators.
As always, if I can be of any assistance, my door is always open. You can reach me at ablackburn1@tvusd.us or call my office at (951) 296-5579.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Blackburn
Law Enforcement Presence on Campus
On Thursday, April 20th our school enjoyed a visit from a few of our local School Resource Officers who were on hand to help with traffic flow. Our front office received many calls from concerned parents due to the police presence, so we wanted to take this opportunity to let our families know that from time to time you will see School Resource Officers visiting our campuses. These visits are not a cause for concern but are in fact an important part of their jobs in building relationships with their school community. Please know that if ever there is an emergency situation that affects our campus, parents and families will be notified in a timely manner through our blackboard messaging system.
In fuzzier news... while the officers were here, a mother duck and her ducklings were discovered crossing our campus. Our School Resource Officers jumped into action and helped relocate the duck family to their new home in Harveston Lake. Being educators, we couldn't help but make a connection with the classic children's picture book, titled "Make Way for Ducklings", written and illustrated by Robert McCloskey. The story in McCloskey's book is about another duck family who find themselves wandering far from home. McCloskey's story earned him a Caldecott Medal in 1942 and inspired a bronze statue in the Boston Public Garden, the very place his inspiration for the book was born. If you would like to enjoy a read aloud of "Make Way for Ducklings" with your child, please click on the book above.

Social Studies Curriculum Adoption
TVUSD engages in an ongoing cycle of reviewing our curriculums to ensure that they continue to align with our district goals, current learning standards, teaching practices, and the rapidly changing associated technologies. This year we created a team of teachers from every grade level, at every school site, to review and pilot new history social science curriculums. This pilot team had the opportunity to review the updated History Social Science Framework (adopted in 2016), and The Fair Education Act (adopted in 2012). They also received presentations from 4 publishers on the California Department of Education’s approved curriculum list prior to selecting TCI and Studies Weekly as the two curriculums TVUSD would pilot. After piloting each curriculum for 9 weeks, our pilot team reconvened to make a collaborative recommendation to the school board for adoption approval.
As a parent or guardian of an elementary school student, we are interested in your feedback. The materials have been available for public review at the District Office, and we recognize the need to make them more accessible to you. Both of these curriculums are also available at our school site. If you would like to come review both curriculums, please note that we will ask you to sign-in through our Raptor system, and we will ask you to complete a Google Form following your review of the instructional materials. Your input will be collected and used as part of the process in selecting the best curriculum to support history social science standards for TVUSD elementary students.
