Message from ISCA!
We have been very pleased with the number submitted to present at this Fall’s IN School Counselor Association Conference, being held November 14-15 at the Marriott Indianapolis East. Knowing how busy this time of year is for many of you, we’ve decided to keep the CFP Application portal open for a few more weeks, until May 15, to give more of you time to complete and submit an application. We know state testing has had many of you running around crazy!
If you have information to share that you believe would be beneficial to your IN school counselor peers from around the state, please take the time to submit an application. Also, forward this email to any colleagues you think would make good presenters at the annual ISCA Conference, and encourage them to apply, as well.
We have a great conference planned. Click here to view the keynote speakers scheduled to be with us in November, and…you willalso notice you can already register for the conference, and book your hotel room at the Marriott East!
We look forward to seeing many of you in November!
Your friends at ISCA!
Key Messages from MHA!
- Mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and well-being, and mental illnesses are common and treatable.
- A healthy lifestyle can help to prevent the onset or worsening of mental health conditions, as well as chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It can also help people recover from these conditions.
- For those dealing with a chronic health condition and the people who care for them, it can be especially important to focus on mental health. When dealing with dueling diagnoses, focusing on both the physical and mental health concerns can be daunting – but critically important in achieving overall wellness.
- Humor, spirituality, recreation, animal companionship, and work-life balance are important for everyone, but may be of special importance to people also living with chronic health conditions and those who care for them.
- Finding a reason to laugh, going for a walk, meditating, playing with a pet, or working from home once a week can go a long way in making you both physically and mentally healthy.
- The company of animals, whether as pets or service animals, can have a profound impact on a person’s quality of life and ability to recover from illnesses. A pet can be a source of comfort and can help us to live mentally healthier lives.
- Sometimes life is far from funny but finding humor in a situation can lift moods with laughter and help people to better deal with and overcome difficult experiences.
- Whether you go to church, meditate daily, or simply find time to enjoy that cup of tea each morning while checking in with yourself, it can be important to connect with your spiritual side in order to find that mindbody connection.
- Living a healthy lifestyle may not be easy but can be achieved by gradually making small changes and building on those successes.
- Finding the balance between work and play, the ups and downs of life, physical health and mental health, can help you on the path towards focusing both #4Mind4Body.

$12,000 Renewal Grants for Indiana School Counselors and other K-12 Educators
Lilly Endowment announced its 33rd Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program (TCFP). This renewal program supports Indiana educators to take intentional time to pursue their dreams and passions, explore new areas of interest, and expand existing talents or develop new ones. Renewal times encourage new experiences, exploration and reflection to discover renewed energy and enthusiasm, spark innovative approaches to teaching and leading, and reveal thoughtful ways to enhance creativity in students and classrooms. Up to 100 grants, each totaling $12,000, will be awarded in 2020. Learn more about TCFP at lillyendowment.org.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE U.S. NAVAL SEA CADET CORPS TWO PROGRAMS
Cadets ages 10 through 13 belong to our junior program, the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC). The NLCC training program is modeled after the Sea Cadet program, but it is tailored to be age-appropriate. The training program is less arduous, but still includes a wide variety of training opportunities designed to give League Cadets exposure to Navy life. Cadets can attend a one-week, away-from-home Navy League Orientation class. Cadets who complete orientation can participate in advanced training sessions such as classes in aviation, sailing, leadership, medical and adventure training. League Cadets also learn about small boats and small boat safety using the U.S. Coast Guard’s safe boating curriculum.
Cadets ages 13 and up enroll in our senior program, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC). This program offers a nautically-oriented training program for young Americans, which exposes cadets to the full rigors of a military training program. After enrolling in the program, all Sea Cadets must attend a mandatory two-week recruit training session. These training sessions are taught at the Navy’s Recruit Training Command, at other naval bases or stations, and at regional recruit training sites using other military host resources. The curriculum of this training is approved by the U.S. Navy and standardized at all training sites. Although the NSCC incorporates traditional military values and organization as a framework, it is not a recruiting program. The NSCC allows young people to sample military life with no obligation or commitment to join any branch of the armed forces. Both the NSCC and NLCC youth programs afford equal opportunity to all American youth to participate without regard to race, color, religion, gender, or disability. The NSCC program is open to full-time students in public, private, or homeschooled settings.
Note: If completed the summer before Freshmen year or after it may count as meeting the Employability Skills graduation requirement for Graduation Pathways!
