Peak View was recognized as a Virginia Naturally School. This is an official environmental education school recognition program of the Commonwealth, administered by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries with support from the Department of Education, Department of Environmental Quality and other resource agencies. Schools are recognized for exemplary efforts to increase the environmental awareness and stewardship of its students. Recycling, children's engineering and the Peak at the Bay program facilitated by Laura Naftel, are a few programs that are sponsored at Peak View.
Click here for pictures of last year's Peak at the Bay Program. We are currently underway with thirty-one 5th grade students. The final communicating event will be on on Oct. 16 for ALL 5th grade students during the annual Environmental Day. Please join the Peak View students and start recycling or discuss with your child others ways to take care of our environment.

Reflections Contest

Reflections is a PTA sponsored program focusing on the Arts. Each year there is a theme where you can unleash your inner artist by choreographing a dance, producing a film, writing a poem or story, composing a song, taking a picture or creating a piece of visual art. This year's theme is “Let Your Imagination Fly." Contact Keri Davis at keribdavis@gmail.com for a PTA Reflections Entry Form and return it to the school office by November 6th.

The National PTA Reflections committee sponsors a student-focused THEME SEARCH CONTEST annually to determine a future theme. The winner will be selected in January and will receive $100 and recognized at the National PTA Convention. Email your student’s theme idea to keribdavis@gmail.com by November 1st. Our PTA’s five favorite theme ideas will be sent on to the state PTA.

Revved Up To Read

Look at Mrs. Palmer getting REVVED UP TO READ! A fantastic school year is beginning and Peak View's year long reading theme is REVVED UP TO READ. Reading is one of the most inexpensive and readily available forms of education and entertainment. Parents have a HUGE role to play in helping their children become better readers. You know your child better than anyone else, so you can help him/her choose books/reading material that meet his or her special interests. Read to your child, read with your child or listen to your child read and discuss the book with them. As you read throughout this school year, we are asking you to send photos of your child reading in the car, alongside a vehicle, on a plane or train, next to toy cars or other forms of transportation... anything goes as long as everyone is safe. Use your creativity and send any photos to jimbrescia@rockingham.k12.va.us. Photos can also be delivered to my mailbox here at school or to my room, G41. We want to display these photos around Peak View to motivate our students/teachers to read and build interest for our reading theme. Thanks in advance for your support and your help with reading at home.

Veteran's Day Writing Contest

Peak View is sponsoring a Veterans' Day writing contest. There will be one winner from each 3rd, 4th and 5th grade level ---- criteria for 3rd grade will be 50-100 words, 4th grade will be 100-150 words and 5th grade will be 150-200 words. The topic is "How Are Veterans Our Heroes."
We will also once again have an Honor Wall where students, families, faculty and staff can honor veterans they know (living and deceased). More information will be sent home with students who choose to participate in this activity.

RCPS Unified Basketball League

RCPS is making history this year! We are the first school system in the state of Virginia that has a Unified Basketball League. All four high schools have a basketball team made up of students with learning disabilities, giving these students a chance to participate in a high school sport just like their classmates.
If you would like to be a part of history click here for the schedule of the games.

Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels

I hope everyone has been collecting BOX TOPS all summer long. Last year we didn't meet our goal, but we were so close!! The money we get from Box Tops helps our school get many needed items for our students. This is a very easy way to earn money. Again I want to make our goal 30,000 Box Tops, that's $3,000.00 just from clipping Box Tops. Lets go over and beyond this school year to not only meet, but surpass our goal. We will again do a contest;; look for details sometime in November. Also if anyone has a business or office we can make a Box for Box Tops collection please let me know. I would be more than happy to drop it off. Any questions please email staciebennett46@gmail.com.
We are still collecting Campbell Soup labels so be sure to send them in. This year all the money will be donated to the Art Department to order what they may need. Any questions please contact staciebennett46@gmail.com.

We want your socks!

Girl Scout Troop 79, made up of 15 Peak View 5th graders, is doing a bronze project for Operation Happy Sock. We need socks to make catnip toys for homeless cats in our local shelters. If you want to help, you can bring socks that are clean, in good condition and put them in the collection box in the office. Isn’t it time to clean out that sock drawer and admit that all those lone and mismatched socks will probably never meet their mate again?? Give ‘em a second life as a Happy Sock!

Thank you on behalf of Troop 79 and homeless cats everywhere!
