Principal Passage...

Hope you are staying warm this cold April day. I see a mountain of mulch out back, a sign of spring at school:) Hope they spread it soon. Thanks for the spring spirit you bring to school and our students each day.

Haiku follow-up support on Tuesday, 4/12 with Jennifer Fernbach in the computer lab. She'll be here in time for first special and then throughout the day.

We had a very successful Oration contest last week. Thank you to fourth and fifth grade teachers for preparing students so well and Mr. Stern for excellent execution of the event. Some of the speeches will be repeated at local events to promote their message of Hunger in America. Congrats to all!

Please encourage any residential students to enroll - especially kindergarten so that we account for their capacity prior to transfer applicants being assigned.

Student enrollment data cards
are due to Terri on 4/15. For K-3, mark them with BOY, MOY and LPM (last progress monitoring) result. Notes of insight may be added as you see fit. We will use these cards to build next year's rosters.

Big World Recess Pre-Program

This semester’s main fundraiser is the Whitaker Elementary Fun Run! Hosting a Fun Run means there is no selling or delivering products. Family and friends anywhere in the world can support our school by giving pledges toward the number of laps your students will run on the day of the Fun Run. Pledges can be entered onto once our program begins. We are so excited to celebrate your students for the Whitaker Elementary Fun Run on Thursday, April 28th!

Our program will last about two weeks, starting with our kickoff Pep Rally on Tuesday, April 19th. It’s going to be powered by the Boosterthon Fun Run, a fun organization that’ll organize Fun Runs for over 1,600 schools this year. Our Fun Run also comes with a world-class character theme. This year’s theme is BIG WORLD RECESS, a global fitness theme all about building character through sports. Students will travel our big world learning how to play with character through from REAL kid-athletes in other countries.

Teachers, once our Whitaker Elementary Fun Run begins, we will need your help with three things:

· Check daily

· Email your parents daily

· Promote pledging daily

You will learn more at the Teacher Meeting on Tuesday, April 19th at 2:45pm in the Media Center.

Let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to a fantastic program!

A few more items...

  • If you are serving as a Mentor to someone new to our faculty. Please attempt to get observations done by April 15th or sooner. End of the year for these is not advisable for many reasons. Need support? Reach out to Lindsay or me.

  • April is National School Library Month / National Library Week is the week of April 11th. What a great time to recognize our JoEllen and Allie for the specialized services they offer to our students, teachers, staff, and parents.

Research shows that student achievement is higher in schools where a certified school librarian works directly with students and offers a full media program. We are fortunate.

  • Ecolab Grant Application Ecolab Inc. will sponsor its Visions for Learning Teachers Grants again this year. A quality education is one of our greatest assets and Ecolab is proud to continue their support for educators in the Piedmont Triad area. Ecolab will award a total of $77,000 to qualified grant recipients. Please find attached the 2016 Visions for Learning Grant application. ALL applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2016. Completed applications may be submitted via email to Please note this is the only email address where submissions will be accepted.
