Varsity Football Makes History
It was a historic season for the varsity football team. The team completed its first ever 10 win season, its first ever outright league championship, and its first ever district championship in school history. While the season ended with a tough loss to a good Mott team, the boys made Carlson proud with their achievements. Also, the student body and community's loud and constant support was a huge catalyst for the team all season.

We Need to Talk About Grades
I don't doubt that if you're a parent reading this and your child is in this position or you are in the position of not knowing your child's progress, it can be overwhelming. If you're a student and reading this, avoidance might be your thing (ie. you don't look at your grades, you don't talk about your grades, but somehow you can't stop thinking about them). My goal is to establish a strong support and partnership between home and school so that we can tackle this together. I want to encourage all families to take the following steps (especially if you are concerned about progress in school).
1. Check Mi-Star Parent Connect once a week - Grades should be updated weekly and assignments that are graded with a zero are the first indicator that something is missing. If you are unsure about how to get on to Mi-Star, please contact our main office at 734-379-7100 or email my secretary, Mrs. Butkin, at butkinj@gibdist.net
2. Check your Parent Square for messages from teachers/staff - Our staff is communicating through Parent Square, which is a platform that allows for messages to go to email and through text. I don't know about you all, but if I can get a text for something, it definitely makes it easier. If you don't have it as an app on your phone, I would strongly recommend it. It has been a game changer for communication for me with my own child.
3. Communicate with all teachers, but especially those with classes you are concerned about - Teachers are the FIRST place to go because they have the BEST information about what's going on in class, the expectations, and what students in class need to do to move towards receiving credit. Staff can communicate via email, by phone, or in a conference. A link for contact information for all staff can be found here.
4. In a REALLY bad spot? Don't throw it all out - If grades look terrible in many classes right now, connect with your child's counselor so that they can develop a plan to maximize the amount of credit earned. Too often, when students are really behind, they get overwhelmed and give up when they don't need to. Ms. Palazzolo (palazzm@gibdist.net) has students with last name A-G, Mrs. Trush (trushj@gibdist.net) has students with last name H-O, and Ms. Walters (walterk@gibdist.net) has students with last name P-Z. Additionally, if your child receives special education services, the best resource is to first involve their case manager.
5. Advisory time is where it's at - Students who have a 2nd hour in the building have advisory built into this class period. Their 2nd hour teacher is checking grades with them each week and working to support their success. Additionally, we have 8 intervention teachers during this advisory teachers designed to help students with areas of struggle. On top of this, we have tutors available during this time for homework help as well. If this is something that you feel your child would benefit from, please contact their advisory teacher OR the teacher of the class they are struggling in to ensure this happens.
