Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
I could not be more proud to be a Pirate! Last week was amazing! We have so much for which to be proud. Dr. Wright was very complimentary of our schools, faculstaff, and students for a job well done. She especially noticed how beautiful our school is and how amazing our students behaved for the event. To add to the week, our students and teachers found ways to ward off the use of drugs and tobacco with various opportunities to dress up in wacky ways. Our band placed 11th out of 45 bands at the state competition, and our football team took ownership of the bridge with the defeat of the second team from over the bay. All of that is awesome, but the most important thing that took place this past week was the focused attention on providing high-quality lessons to students in the face of what many would call distractions. You saw them as opportunities to teach students about our legacy, build relationships, and provide additional bridges to understanding.
As the PCMS students indicated, they expect to see four principals on the stage next year; they are ready to do what is required. Let's all stay focused on our mission. Move toward it through our beliefs. With that, I submit the Captain’s Log. #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje

Here are the facts, based on the 2019 NAEP results:
- Mississippi ranks No. 1 in the nation for 4th grade score gains in reading and mathematics. For the first time, Mississippi 4th graders scored higher than the national average in mathematics and tied the nation in reading.
- The percentage of Mississippi students scoring proficient or above on NAEP has increased significantly over the past decade, particularly in 4th grade mathematics, where proficiency levels nearly doubled (22% to 39%).
- 8th grade students rank No. 3 for growth in mathematics, outpacing the nation’s progress.
- 8th grade reading held steady as the national average dropped.
- Mississippi students living in poverty are outperforming their peers nationally. Both black and white students from low-income homes in Mississippi achieved higher scores than the national average in all four NAEP subjects. Hispanic students from low-income families outperformed their peers nationally in three of four NAEP tested subjects.

Pirate CelebrAtion of Excellence: Above the Rest!
To our teachers and school administrators - WOW! The credit is owed to you and our children for making this all possible. Thank you for your service to our children, district, and community.
Thank you to Coach Tim Ladner and our athletics department for doing the heavy lifting of being our showcase for the event (Cheerleaders, Football Team, Basketball Team, and Band were amazing!)
Thanks to Mrs. Paige Cobb and Ms. Chelsea Pace and their student council for a job well done while serving as ambassadors for our school district!
Thanks, PCES for being gracious hosts! Mrs. Hinton and her students' performance was a huge hit with the students. It was a wonderful interpretation of the poem, "Our Deepest Fear."
Thank you to Mrs. Patty Cooper, Ms. Meridith Bang, and their teams for organizing the event! The team effort among the departments is greatly appreciated.

Robotics Off to Great Start!
This year's mission requires the drivers to place red and blue cubes in coordinating corners of the field, which are on the opposite end of the field to earn 10 pts for each correctly placed cube. The drivers must also place green cubes on a platform to earn 20 pts per placed cube. Finally, all of this is done within one minute while working with a second team and their robot. Both teams must plan together how they will go about accomplishing the tasks within the time limit. As an added bonus and obstacle, there are orange balls on the field that are in the way but count 1 point for each one that is placed in the cubes in the corners of the field. The highest obtainable score is 100 points.
Coaches: BWarden, JBunn, and JFisher #criticalthinkers
NOTE: K-5 teachers, have you opened your robot and let the children explore? We would love to see pictures and videos of the children learning how to use them.
