Orchard Lane Elementary School
Weekly Newsletter: March 26, 2021
A Note from Mr. Lindner and Mrs. Kader:
Good Afternoon, Orchard Lane families!
This week we continued our celebration of Women’s History Month with lessons on the following topics:
Susanna Salter - First Female Mayor (Argonia, Kansas) in the United States in 1887. She was a pioneer for other women to be elected into political office
June 10, 1963 - The Equal Pay Act passes an abolishes wage discrimination. This law made it illegal for employers to give different wages for the same work based solely on gender.
Helen Keller - Helen Keller overcame a childhood illness that left her blind, deaf and without the ability to speak to eventually become a prolific writer, disability rights activist, and speaker.
Malala Yousafzai - Malala is a well-known women’s rights activist who has bravely been in the public eye to fight for the rights of women to be educated and treated equally in Pakistan. She even survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012.
Fearless Girl Statue - The Fearless Girls statue stands outside the New York Stock Exchange Building as a constant reminder of resiliency and strength of female leadership in the corporate world. Originally the statue was placed in the path of the famous BULL statue on Broadway. The plaque below the statue stated: "Know the power of women in leadership. SHE makes a difference."
Thank you to our 5th graders for their powerful writing pieces they have recently completed about the benefits and concerns with serving chocolate milk with our school lunch program. They needed to support a claim with evidence they gathered through careful research. This week a small group of 5th grade students were able to meet with Mr. Lindner and Cindy Jensen (our District’s Director of Food Service) to share their claims and evidence. Mrs. Jensen shared how the decision was made to serve chocolate milk and she had a very professional discussion with our students on school nutrition. Mrs. Jensen commented how impressed she was with the work they had done to research and write on this topic. Thank you to Mrs. Jensen for her time, to our students for their hard work, and to our teachers for their instruction.

A note from our school psychologist, Dr. Nancy Ulschmid -
Did you know......that OL has a collection of books to help parents (and teachers), and student's themselves enhance social-emotional functioning? I started the collection a number of years ago using funds provided by the PFC (thank you!) and other school funds and we currently have 70 books in our collection! The books are bar-coded in the Parents section and include informational books for parents about various social/emotional/behavioral concerns, books for kids to read about characters who have similar problems/issues to solve, as well as, Self-help books for kids. If you are interested in exploring our collection I can help you choose the most appropriate book for you and your child. Books are checked out in the student's name, but please know that checking out one of these books will not affect your student's book limit.
I am always on the look-out for new book titles, so if you have read a book that you thought was particularly helpful, please let me know!
If you are interested in exploring our book collection or have a great book in mind that you think would be a good addition to our collection, please reach out to me at: nancy.ulschmid@nbexcellence.org or 262 789-6513
