Eighth grade ELA classes participated in a cross curricular gallery walk combining U.S. History and poetry. Students examined the causes of the Civil War, a brief history of Walt Whitman's life in Washington D.C. and Lincoln's presidency during the Civil War. After reviewing the background information, students interpreted the poem O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman.
ELA classes enjoyed viewing book trailers during their library visit. Book trailers can be compared to movie trailers, they entice the viewer to check out the book or to consider a different genre to read.
Sixth grade AVID classes engaged in a live NEPRIS session with an animator. Students asked the presenter questions and learned about the educational needs and job requirements to be an animator.
Sixth grade ELA students played Vocabulary on the Move. Each student had a academic vocabulary word posted to their forehead and then asked their peers clues to figure out their word. The students really enjoyed the game and were able to recall the words the next day.
