8th Grade Transition to EHHS! Save the Date!
Below is a message from Mr. Verner, the East Hampton High School Principal inviting all our 8th grade families to orientation.
You are cordially invited to attend the East Hampton High School Orientation on December 7th, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. During that evening you will have the opportunity to meet some of the teachers, school counselors, administrators, and other staff. You will also have the opportunity to hear important information from the department heads of several academic areas as well as East Hampton High School students. This includes information that will be helpful as your child selects courses for next year. A bit different than middle school, our process of course selection begins months before your child arrives in the fall.
In mid-January, high school administration and school counselors will meet with your child at the middle school to explain the scheduling process and discuss elective courses. The middle school staff will make academic course recommendations for your child. If you have questions about the course recommendations, please contact your child’s 8th grade teacher at the middle school.
The next four years of your child’s educational career are important ones. The entire high school staff will work closely with you to ensure that your child has a very positive experience and I look forward to meeting you on December 7th.
Sincerely,
Eric P. Verner
EHHS Principal
PJ Day!
On Friday, December 8th students are invited to wear pjs. Students are encouraged to bring in donations of $1 or more to help support Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Since 2011, hundreds-of-thousands of children in Connecticut and Massachusetts have worn their PJs to school, and, simultaneously, have raised more than $1,400,000 in support of kids at Connecticut Children’s. Each year, PJ Day has inspired more and more schools and businesses across the state of Connecticut to participate. We hope our students will join!

A Look Into Our Panther Community!
DNA Braclets
Eighth-grade science students made DNA model bracelets before Thanksgiving. They picked an organism, built a DNA strand for a gene in that species, and matched nucleotide base pairs to create the double helix shape of DNA. Genetic information in organisms is stored in the base pairs—adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G)—which form ladder rungs in the DNA molecules. The bracelets show how the pairs are always AT, TA, CG, or GC. Each species is unique, though there are many similarities among them.
Escape Room
Algebra 1 students had to escape the room this week! Students had to work as a team and use their knowledge of Simplifying Radicals to solve the puzzles. The first team in each class to escape won a prize.
EHMS Profile of a Graduate
During Advisory this Wednesday, students engaged in discussions centered around Responsibility - exploring its meaning and discussing what it looks like in various situations, particularly within the classroom setting. Responsibility stands as a fundamental attribute in our Profile of a Graduate. Throughout the academic year, students across all grade levels will create digital portfolios showcasing evidence of their growth in essential transferable skills crucial for their success not only at EHMS but also in their future endeavors. Our Profile of a Graduate has 5 attributes: Responsibility, Initiative, Resilience, Perspectives and Inquiry. We are committed to guiding students through a comprehensive review of these attributes and facilitating ample opportunities for them to exhibit and master these vital skills.
Investigating Characterization
Seventh grade is working on drafting a companion book of the two novels they read during the prior Investigating Characterization reading unit. Their companion books will include an analysis of theme and symbolism, as well as cross-text comparisons. Students worked in Mrs. Aiken’s class to sort transition words depending on whether the word would work better in comparing two texts, or contrasting two texts.
PBIS Bingo!
Bingo during lunch was such a success with students that we brought it back again this week! On Tuesday, Mr. Mannes and Mrs. McCabe ran a game of bingo during all lunch waves. Winners were able to pick rewards from our PBIS menu. Students had a great time!
Positive Office Referrals!
Below are some students who have received Positive Office Referrals for their behaviors that have exemplified our PBIS pillars of Respect, Responsibility, Compassion and Pride. Students were able to choose a reward from our menu of options like eating outside with friends! Great job! Our students celebrated this week are:
6th graders Mason Ferguson and Brayden Formiglio
7th grader Alex Beaulieu
8th graders Julian Faden and Dylan Moyer

Important Attendance Reminder
A phone call does not excuse an absence..
A phone call is appreciated, but only an email to our attendance inbox or written note can officially excuse absence 1 through 9. Below is our attendance email:
Note: Between the school name and the word Attendance is a underscore ( _ )
EHMS_Attendance@easthamptonct.org
If a student has four unexcused absences in one month or 10 unexcused absences in a year they are classified as truant. If a child misses 18 or more days in a school year – excused or unexcused absences – the student is classified as chronically absent.

Nurse's Corner - Importance of Sleep
More recently, I have been seeing many students in the Health Office with complaints of fatigue and not getting a good night’s sleep. Generally, most teens need 8-10 hours of sleep, but it is common for much less. Sleep is important to maintaining mood, relationships, and the ability to pay attention. Because of this, I thought it would be a good idea to share a few things that can be done during the day to aid in a good night’s sleep. Below are some tips to help.
1) Be active during the day – physical activity can help improve mood and decrease stress.
2) Avoid caffeine near bedtime – Caffeine is a stimulant and teens should be avoiding it anyways, but it is a good reminder for adults!
3) Say goodnight to electronics – allow your brain to rest. Turn off all electronics about an hour before bedtime.
4) Keep a sleep routine – going to bed the same time every night or sticking with a routine of reading, meditation, or listening to music before bed helps to aid in relaxation before sleep.
5) Expect a good night’s sleep – stress can affect sleep. Instead of worrying that you won’t get enough sleep, tell yourself that you will!
These are great tips for those of all ages, but it is a good reminder that teens are working hard mentally and physically. Sleep is so important and sometimes your students need some help to remember that. A good night’s sleep will help your student be more focused, productive, and willing to participate in school activities. Sleep well!
