Our Out of This World Adventures!
In Science: We learned the important parts of plants and what their purpose is. We learned how plants grow and make their own food which is called, Photosynthesis. We also became experts on how we rely on plants. For example: plants produce oxygen for us to breathe. Did you know that some plants can make medicine? The Aloe plant can produce a gel that heals burns and cuts. Ask your student more about this!
In Math: We learned a lot about square numbers. We also learned how to make different arrays. Do you know what an array is? Ask your student to show you how to make one! Another area we worked with was the divisibility rules. We learned the rules for the numbers: 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10. On Wednesday we started about exponents. Finally we did a large amount of practice in identifying prime and composite numbers.
In Reading: We are excited to report that we have just started our Book Clubs. We have also learned how to read/interpret books with out any words in them. Check out this link to see what a book without words is like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSYVGnZ5kI8. Next week in reading we will become bloggers. We will learn what a blog is and how writers can reflect on what they read using a blog. Each student will have an account on Kidblog and once our site is up and running, parents will be able to read/discover the amazing things we are learning in our Book Clubs.
In Writing: We have been vigorously working on writing to our pen pals. Our pen pals live in Huachuca City, Arizona. We even took a virtual field trip by using Google Earth to look at where our pen pals live and go to school.
By doing this we learned:
- There are a large number of small towns where our pen pals live
- Their classroom are individual buildings that have access to the outdoors
- They have a huge variety of cacti in that area
