Five Ways to Beat a Cold
- Wash your hands often. Most colds are transmitted through indirect physical contact.
- Drink plenty of fluids. It helps flush germs from your body.
- Get a good night’s sleep. This keeps your immune cells powered up.
- Keep at least three feet away from coughers and sneezers. This helps avoid contact with airborne droplets, which may make you sick.
- Have chicken soup. Any warm fluids can help relieve cold symptoms and act as an expectorant.
Sleep
School age children need 10-12 hours of a sleep a night. Lack of sleep can cause irritable or hyper types of behavior and may make it more difficult for kids to pay attention in school. It is important to have a consistent bedtime. No matter what your child’s age, establish a bedtime routine that encourages good sleep habits. These tips can help ease kids into a good night’s sleep:
- Power down. Turn off electronics at least one hour before bedtime. If your child has a TV in their room, consider removing it. Research shows that children who have a TV in their room tend to sleep less.
- Create a calming routine. Winding down each night with the same routine signals that it is time for sleep.
- Stick to a bedtime. Alert your child a half hour and 10 minutes beforehand.
