PTSO - Paint Your Parking Space Event

SENIORS who have registered to Paint Your Parking Space: Check Your Email! You have been emailed instructions, a date for painting, and *maybe* some follow-up questions. Please reply to the email so we know you've received it! Don't see an email? Contact us at jhhspto@wps.k12.va.us.

ADULTS: We need a few volunteers during painting times to ensure that projects match approved designs and that the supplies are appropriate - plus just to be there as a resource for any students who might need some guidance. Painting is from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on 10/29, 10/30, and 11/6. Please click here if you're able to share a bit of time with us and/or if you're able to donate refreshments!

Rotary Exchange Meeting

On Thursday,10/27, Rotarian Tom DuVal from the Rotary District 7570 Youth Exchange Committee will be holding an informational session after school in Julia Kogut's room (1221) regarding the exchange programs for our local district. These programs cost less than other programs and multiple inbound and outbound students in the past have reported that it is a wonderful, life-changing experience!

There are both long-term programs (whole school year) and short-term programs (summer) available. Some students prefer to do the exchange as a "bonus year" between high school and college.

JHHS Student Panel Interest

Student voice and choice are of utmost importance to JHHS. We are seeking students who reflect the diversity of JHHS to assist the principal in making sure students have what they need to thrive here at JHHS!

Selected students will meet on select advisory dates from November 2022 - May 2023.

Selection Process: When building the initial team, we ask all applicants to share their identities so we can be intentional about representation and intersectionality on the team. We seek to represent as many identities as possible, while recognizing that no one person can speak for a group of individuals. Applicants will also be evaluated based on their personal statements outlining their skills and commitment to this work, as well as an application that they will be required to complete.

Please use the Google Form below to apply! ALL are Welcome to Apply!

Youth Scholarships!

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 25,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.

The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$21,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins at least a scholarship of $1,000.

Before submitting your essay, read the rules and eligibility requirements, and find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31. Download and complete the 2022-2023 Voice of Democracy entry form here.

PBIS Student Expectations

JHHS will begin a virtual rewards program for students during the month of October through the PBIS Rewards platform. This is very exciting news!! Students now earn reward points for demonstrating desired behaviors according to our Handley PRIDE expectations!!

When an administrator, teacher, or staff person acknowledges a student demonstrating these behaviors, they can now award them points through the PBISRewards website. All students have an account that they can access at PBISrewards.com or through CLEVER. At this time, the points that students earn will allow them to qualify for incentives. We hope to expand this effort by finding ways wherein students can “spend” their points, more to come on that! Please support this effort by encouraging your students to meet our school wide expectations each and every day!

Handley Parking Permit

Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. If you are going to be driving to school for the 2022 -2023 school year and parking in the Handley parking lot, you must obtain a parking permit. Below you will find instructions on how to register your vehicle and obtain a parking permit.

  • Step one - Visit the Handley web page and locate the High School Student Parking Pass Application (Spanish here)

    • If you do not have access to the internet, you may come into school and use a library computer or pick up a copy of the parking application in the main office

  • Step three - Bring the completed parking application to school on July 28 or anytime after during business hours.

    • See the school treasurer to pay the $25 parking fee or parking permits may be purchased through School Cash online using credit cards. The necessary registration form will still need to be completed online prior to picking up the parking permit hang tag. Once the registration is completed and credit card payment is made, bring your receipt to the General Office to pick up the hang tag.

    • Take the receipt and complete parking application to the main office and one of the administrative assistants will assign you a parking space and give you a parking permit.

  • Step four - Hang the parking permit from your rear view mirror.

    • The parking permit must be visible.

    • The parking permit will have a number on it. That number is your assigned spot for the year.

You may only park in your assigned spot during school hours. If you fail to park in your spot, break any parking lot rules, and/or chronically late to school you may lose your privilege to park in the lot and anywhere on school property.
