Student voice and choice are of utmost importance to JHHS. We are seeking students who reflect the diversity of JHHS to assist the principal in making sure students have what they need to thrive here at JHHS!

Selected students will meet on select advisory dates from November 2022 - May 2023.

Selection Process: When building the initial team, we ask all applicants to share their identities so we can be intentional about representation and intersectionality on the team. We seek to represent as many identities as possible, while recognizing that no one person can speak for a group of individuals. Applicants will also be evaluated based on their personal statements outlining their skills and commitment to this work, as well as an application that they will be required to complete.

Students who are enrolled in Kinesiology 10 & Driver’s Education course must attend this STATE MANDATORY presentation with a parent or guardian to receive their Driver’s Education Certificate along with upholding a 70% in the classroom. This DEC-1 card allows the student to be eligible to take Behind- the-Wheel and fulfill Virginia licensing requirements.

This presentation will be available for any student or parent that is enrolled in the Driver’s Education class portion for KIN 10 on one of the following dates:

Bus transportation to and from the event will be provided and students will be supervised by WPS personnel. The Virginia Space Grant Consortium provides FREE NASA-related programs for Virginia's high school students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The programs have an interactive online STEM learning experience and are highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA.

11th AND 12th GRADE
Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) focuses on NASA’s human spaceflight missions and the Journey to the Moon and on to Mars. Students can earn up to five free dual enrollment college credits. http://vsgc.odu.edu/VASTS/, applications are OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 24.

Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) focuses on the challenges the next generation of scientists and engineers to become part of the solution to the societal issues faced by the impacts of climate change. The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 25,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.

The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$21,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins at least a scholarship of $1,000.

Before submitting your essay, read the rules and eligibility requirements, and find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31. Download and complete the 2022-2023 Voice of Democracy entry form here.

JHHS will begin a virtual rewards program for students during the month of October through the PBIS Rewards platform. This is very exciting news!! Students now earn reward points for demonstrating desired behaviors according to our Handley PRIDE expectations!!

When an administrator, teacher, or staff person acknowledges a student demonstrating these behaviors, they can now award them points through the PBISRewards website. All students have an account that they can access at PBISrewards.com or through CLEVER. At this time, the points that students earn will allow them to qualify for incentives. We hope to expand this effort by finding ways wherein students can “spend” their points, more to come on that! Please support this effort by encouraging your students to meet our school wide expectations each and every day!

We will be hosting a Student Speed Networking Event on November 16 from 11-1 at the Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center. This event will be for Handley seniors who are undecided about their next steps after graduation.

The goal of speed networking is to give students the chance to build confidence and an opportunity to meet local employers and find out about as many different careers as possible within a short amount of time. Students will rotate every 5 minutes through businesses/programs to learn who they are, what they do, and what opportunities are available.

We will be serving lunch after the rotations for additional networking time.
