Midway Mustang Memo
May 2018
Dear Parents,
It seems spring just arrived; however, now summer is around the corner! This school year is passing much too quickly! Our students continue to make us proud as they show their artwork at Art Exhibits, perform and share their musical talent, compete in math competitions, earn praise for good leader qualities, and excel in academics. They have gained in mind, body, and spirit over the year. Adopting the Leader in Me way of life has helped all of us as we learn and practice habits that support social, emotional, and academic growth.
Many thanks to our teachers and staff who are dedicated to the well-being of all of our learners. This week is Staff Appreciation Week—our wonderful PTO has a plan for expressing gratitude!
Looking ahead to the next school year, parents can be assured that a great deal of thought and effort will go into the process of forming new classes. A variety of input will be solicited from various teachers in placing students. If you, as a parent, would like to provide further input regarding your child’s needs, please complete the form found at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfM2WbFnWPq0ue8uLLJLSBgvd11T-NNb8jM4fBoJ46KAdstYw/viewform. This information will certainly be considered as we make our final placement decisions this summer. Information must be sent through this form no later than May 4th.
With kind regards,
Jan Munroe, Principal
Daphne Rogers, Assistant Principal
Ashley Starr, Administrative Assistant

Counselor's Corner
As we get closer to the end of the school year and spring fever has begun. Parents, and teachers, might wonder how to keep students focused on ending the school year with a bang.
Here are 5 tips to help your child end the school year strong:
1. Set goals. What is something your child wants to accomplish at school by the end of the year?
2. Keep a consistent schedule.
3. Continue to communicate with teachers and be involved in your child’s academics.
4. Keep up with attendance. When students aren’t in school they miss important instruction and can quickly fall behind.
5. Make sure your child gets enough sleep. It’s beautiful outside and daylight is lasting longer. Often children want to stay up late. Children need 9-12 hours of sleep each night for them to be able to focus properly in school.
For more information, please do not hesitate to call or email me.

News from Nurse Echols
Spring is here! That means two things! Lots of pollen and sunburns! Our policy for sunscreen is the following:
“Because of the possibility of an allergic reaction from sunscreen, this should be treated as a medication. Parents need to bring in the sunscreen with a signed Request for administration of Medication.”
Also, if your student has any medication at Midway, you will need to pick up this medicine by the last day of school at 2:00 PM, one hour before dismissal. You will be receiving a message gram reminding you to pick up any medicines by that time also.
News from the Science Lab
We are so excited to announce that we have another crop of lettuce and spinach that we are picking to serve in our Cafeteria salads! Our Tower Garden has been very successful and all of our students are enjoying learning how to garden through hydroponics! We continue to Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse at school so that Midway can remain a Green School! We have talked about ways to Save our Earth and we were excited to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, 2018!
Thanks for sending in all of your paper towel rolls! We were able to reuse them as 3rd Grade designed Solar Powered Ovens for a STEAM project they were working on to use a renewable source of energy!
Love,
Mrs. Romig
From the Midway Café
Welcome to the end of the school year! It’s going by so quickly. Here in the café we’ve been “hopping” with things to do! We harvested and served our first hydroponic lettuce and spinach, and it was wonderful! We used it in our entrée & side salads, and are so grateful to Mrs. Romig and her students for growing and harvesting the yummy crop. We’ll have another one soon I’m told. Check out the pictures below of our tower with the beautiful plants, the harvest & then the salads we made!
Our Harvests for this Month are broccoli and beets. We’ve learned so much about the health benefits of both. Did you know that 100 calories of broccoli has twice as much protein as 100 calories of steak, and twice the vitamin C of an orange? Beets are equally impressive containing high amounts of folate & vitamin C plus many other vitamins & minerals that boost memory & energy. Perfect veggies for eating right during testing. And our Strong4Life focus reminds us to drink more water. Plenty of rest, nutritious food and good hydration are keys to success.
Just a reminder that during the month of May, we will not have the ability to charge meals. Please keep a close check on your student’s account balance, and call me if I can answer any questions or be of any help at all. I love our students and will help in any way that I can. Here in the Mustang Café we are all grateful for being a part of their day.
Many Thanks!!
