Literary Essay "The Fight"
Cheyanne
Introdution
Have you ever been in a real life fight before with fists and kicks and with an enemy? Well in the story The Fight the main character Will gets himself in a fight with a kid named Mike. He teaches you that there are easy ways to do things but they might not be the right way to go. In the story The Fight, Will was acting childish when he was talking smack, also by trying to put off a fight that he wanted to happen, and getting into a fight with Mike.
Talking Smack
In the story, Will was acting childish when he was talking smack. Will is feeling like he is the best person in the world and that nothing can stop him, but when Mike and Will go to gym class and play basketball things turn out that Will is going to have to fight for the crown that he is the best and really fight too. “I told him that he better watch out, and on the next rebound neither of us watched out and both of us got elbows in the chest.” Will was childish in this quote because he was talking smack and he was trying to sound confident and tough. When Will was being childish he got elbows in his chest. Many people would agree that talking smack to someone else and treating them like Will did is a childish thing to do. When Will was talking smack to Mike, they both started to try and be confident to out show each other. “We started shoving each other under the basket and pointing fingers and making threatening faces, which was fine with me because looking threatening was one of the best things that I did.” Will wasn’t talking smack but he was making threatening faces and other things. Even though he was not talking smack he was physically talking smack. What he is doing is basically talking smack with his body language. Even when you are not talking sometimes you can be communicating that you want to smack talk. Even around other people you can talk smack about someone else. “Walked home with Kevin Cox after school and told him that the next time Mike and I played Basketball I was really going to throw some elbows, and if he, Mike, didn’t like it I would fight him anytime, anywhere.” Will is really just asking for a fight. He doesn’t know it but this conversation with Kevin Cox later on in the story will come back and get him in a fight with Mike, that he did not actually ask Mike with his own words right in front of him to fight. Will is also talking smack about Mike when he was not around with no clue that that was going to come back and bite him too. When you talk to someone that maybe is not who you hate at the moment then you can sometimes get carried away with talking about the people that you do gate in the moment. And then the person you talk to tell's in this case Mike even if they are not close or anything.
Putting Off Fight
Will was acting childish by trying to put off a fight that he wanted to happen. Do you know those kinds of people that don’t know their strength until they have a chance to use it like the thing that goes for a weakness. Will is not one of those people. “Maybe I was one of those people who did not know his own strength until he was confronted.” Will really wants to be able to fight Mike with confidence but since he was acting childish he is not so sure that he can do it, and he was scared to get into a fight that he asked for. Will does not want to fight Mike because he is scared of losing or someone getting really hurt. “I still couldn't summon enough rage or fury or indignation to make me want to fight Mike or anyone else. All I could do was hope that I was subconsciously feeling those things and was merely binding my time.” Will got himself into a fight that he regretted being in and even though he hates Mike he can’t bring himself to fight him because he doesn’t want anybody to get hurt but he should just fight and even if he loses he gets to say that he tried instead of standing there like a kid afraid to ride a roller coaster. He wants to be able to fight him but he can’t move, “I knew I should move in and attack immediately, but I was rooted where I stood.” Will was trying to be a good person by not hurting Mike but Mike is expecting him to fight back and he can not move. He Should try to move and attack because he asked to fight with Mike and he is basically holding back what he asked for. Will does want to fight Mike but his conscience is saying otherwise and to not fight Mike or he might get hurt but is already in this situation that he put himself in, so he should put his pedal to the metal in his body so that he does not feel unaccomplished and feel like he failed himself.
Fighting With Mike
Will is acting childish when he got into the fight in the first place. When Will got into the fight with Mike he kinda got himself into a situation that he didn’t really want to be in, so he doesn’t want to fight or hurt anyone, “And things began to happen very quickly. In an instant Mike was on me, and my legs buckled, and we were wrestling on the ground. In an effort to prove that I could fight someone as dirty as anyone, I gingerly grabbed his groin and discovered that I had neither the will nor the strength to squeeze.” When Mike began to fight Will tried to use his defense by grabbing Mike’s groin but he found himself weak and helpless with it because as he said he could nether find the will nor the strength to to squeeze this shows he does not want to hurt him but he also does not want to go helpless with no defense. This was a childish thing to do even with him not wanting to hurt Mike he could have at least showed that he has some defense in him and fought a little. People were really into this fight unlike Will. “Kill him!’ I heard Linda Lieban cry. ‘Kill him!’ So Mike reached back and hit me on the side of the head with the hardest punch he had thrown yet. ‘Give?’ he said. I shook my head ”Will is trying to defend himself in this situation but unfortunately way more people had Mike’s back than Will’s like when Linda called “Kill Him!” Because she knew that Mike could kill Will and she had a reason for Mike to want to kill Will. Will finds that he does not want to give up but he does not want to fight. Will does not want to give up. “And things began to happen very quickly. In an instant Mike was on me, and my legs buckled, and we were wrestling on the ground. In an effort to prove that I could fight someone as dirty as anyone, I gingerly grabbed his groin and discovered that I had neither the will nor the strength to squeeze. ” When Mike began to fight Will tried to use his defense by grabbing Mike’s groin but he found himself weak and helpless with it because as he said he could nether find the will nor the strength to to squeeze this shows he does not want to hurt him but he also does not want to go helpless with no defense. This was a childish thing to do even with him not wanting to hurt Mike he could have at least showed that he has some defense in him and fought a little.
