Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
final weekly update
May 26, 2017
I can't believe we are coming down the home stretch of the 2016-2017 school year. It has been a wonderful year of exploring and learning. I have truly enjoyed working with this group of boys and girls. They are polite, well mannered and have a love of learning. Thank you for all that you have done to make this school year a success.
This week in phonics, students practiced reading and writing words with the /air/ sound as in chair (air, are, ear, ere). Students learned that adverbs are words that tell more about a verb in a sentence and end in -ly.
In reading, students are learning about opinions. Next week, students will write an opinion piece. Their writing will include a topic sentence, 2 supporting sentences and a closing sentence.
We wrapped up Unit 9, three-dimensional shapes this week in math. Please look for the unit assessment in your child's JES folder next week.
The students have been having fun completing experiments in light and sound in our final science unit, Making Waves. Students have learned that some objects illuminate and can be seen while others need light to be seen. Students also had fun exploring with a variety of materials (sea glass, glass stones, aluminum foil, wax paper, prisms, fiber optic cables and more) to discover how they can affect a light's beam.
First graders were able to watch the metamorphosis of a butterfly "up close & personal". What started as tiny caterpillars emerged as beautiful painted lady butterflies. Ask your child if they can name the stages of the life cycle of a butterfly.
We loved our visit from the MD Science Center! Students used the Engineering Design Process to build, test, and rebuild bridges. They also learned about the building materials used to build the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
The bird feeder projects turned out beautifully! It was a fun learning experience with Mrs. Miller!
End of the Year Picnic
Our "End of the Year Picnic" will be held on Wednesday, June 7th, from 12:15-1:45. Students should bring a picnic lunch (or lunch may be brought to them by a parent). Students should also bring a water bottle and a towel or blanket.
