Being the country with the biggest populations of plant life, Australia is listed as mega-diverse. 24,000 species have their roots in Aussie soil. Since European settlement, 60 types of valuable plants have disappeared.

About the Seed Banks

Seed banks are here to collect and keep seeds of all plants, not only for the future but for natural disasters, pests and dieseases. So far the seed bank, Australian Botanic Garden at Mt Annan holds 20% of Australia's plants. School Kids have figured out another way to preserve our plants and this is by using liquid nitrogen and storing the samples. In this bank there is a place called the 'Doomsday Vault' and this is a place where a back-up collection of seeds from the world's food and fibre plants hidden under a mountain in the arctic. This is essential for any human being who is left from a disaster as it is a plant supply for many years to come.
