St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 9, Term 1 (Thursday 4 April 2019)
Dear Parents and members of our school community
We are now into the fourth week of Lent and the children are continuing to discuss ways that they can support others less fortunate than us. This does not always have to be financial, but may be as simple as a kind word or a smile to someone that crosses your path during the day.
It may be timely to continue this discussion with you child over a meal this week. Below are further ways we can reflect on our lives during this Lenten period. One or more may resonate with you.
Ways to celebrate Lent
Send thank you notes to those that helped you.
Give some time helping at your Church.
Visit a nursing home and talk to people.
Research a charity you're interested in and help them out.
Pray as a family on a daily basis.
Create a journal on how Jesus helped your life.
Invite someone that might be alone over for dinner.
Try to let go of anger, hate, greed, and jealousy as fast as you can.
Try to look at the positive side of life.
Rid yourself of negative behaviours and attitudes.
Make some friends and share happiness.
Lenten Prayer
Lord,
Teach me to give a little of myself to others so they may come to know Jesus.
Show me how I may come to know you better by seeing you in those around me.
Remember our sisters and brothers around the world experiencing extreme poverty and injustice, remind them that they have our continued support to bring about better health care to nurture their lives and well-being.
Amen
Lent Week 5 Project compassion Story
Salma was just 18 years old, pregnant and fearful for her life and that of her unborn child, when she featured in Project Compassion 2013. In Bangladesh, maternal and infant mortality rates are tragically high. During her first pregnancy, Salma was very sick and in distress, she sought the help of a midwife trained by Caritas’ Safe Motherhood Program. Six years on, she’s now a healthy mother of two strong, happy children. Salma is committed to giving her children the education they need to provide them with the future she hoped for
Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help reduce infant mortality rates in countries like Bangladesh and provide hope to pregnant women in remote communities for happy and healthy families.
Lives change when we all give 100%. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

Preparations for our Year Six students to attend camp next week have been finalised and everyone is very excited and looking forward to a wonderful three days. We will enjoy hearing stories from the students, teachers and adults as they partake in the many varied activities that the teachers have planned for them.
I take this opportunity to thank our year Six Teachers, Mr McClorey, Mrs Benino and Ms Nicolaou for all the hard work and hours of preparation they have put into making this camp such a wonderful event for our students. Thank you to all the parents who have given up valuable work time to assist with camp this year. These events just could not take place without the support of our parents and families.
The interschool carnival takes place next week and we know our students will make us proud by displaying sportsmanship and courage as they participate in this annual event.
Thank you to all those parents who have attended the Parent Teacher meetings this past week and for your promptness and involvement.
Each of our students is encouraged to set academic and personal goals that are achievable and timely, such as learning their 5 x tables or their factors of ten by the end of week 10. We call these SMART goals as they are:-
Specific (learn factors of 10),
Measurable (we can test them and see if the goal has been achieved)
Achievable (the goal can be achieved with effort on the part of the child and support from the parent)
Relevant (it is a goal specifically needed to be achieved by the child)
Timely (it needs to be achieved at this time and within a definite time frame, eg 1-2 weeks).

Uniform News
Winter Uniform
Just a reminder that terms 2 & 3 are when we make the change to winter uniform. For our girls that means either a tunic or skirt and a white blouse. Our boys continue with the white shirt and grey shorts and if they choose, can change to our grey trousers. There are long sleeved t’shirts available for Kindy & Pre-Primary and track-suit pants matching the school jacket. So now is a good time to see if last year’s uniforms still fit or perhaps come in to the Uniform Shop for a fitting if you’re buying winter uniform for the first time. If sizes are known, items can be ordered by phone on 9499 9525 stating your child’s name and class, or e-mailed to uniform@stjeromes.wa.edu.au. Payment can be made by credit card/debit card, obviously these orders will only be processed on the days the uniform shop is open (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Goods are placed in class message baskets and given to your child when the basket is collected.
Second-hand Uniforms
We have a great range of good quality second hand items available at the moment, call in and have a browse.

Claire Orange Boys 2 Men Workshop - St Vincent's School
Tickets for "Claire Orange Boys 2 Men Workshop" are now available.
Claire is back for her third visit to St Vincent’s School, to once again enlighten and reassure us as we travel along the slippery slope of parenting.
She is an inspiration to listen to and certainly leave no stone unturned in discovering ways to better help parents understand the mind of a child.
You are most welcome (and encouraged) to bring along a friend or partner to the night.
Please note, this is an 18+ event (breastfeeding babies not included) and the evening begins at 6pm sharp on Friday, 10th May.
I highly recommend coming along if you are a parent of young boys. This is not a night to be missed!
