Money for College
If you are not familiar with the Alaska Performance Scholarship by now, you should be. The APS is a State of Alaska Scholarship program that gives students money for hard work in high school. If students have at least a 2.5 GPA, take the right classes and meet the minimum requirement on SAT, ACT or work keys tests, students can earn up to $18,000 in scholarships. Last year HHS had 77% percent of our graduating class qualify for this program based on GPA and test scores. We only had 40% of students who actually recieved this scholarship based on what classes they took. This means we had some students who didn't want to take a fourth year of math or wanted a free period instead of taking another social studies class, and they lost the opportunity to receive more scholarship monies for college. You can check out the requirements for the APS scholarship at: http://acpe.alaska.gov/STUDENT-PARENT/Grants_Scholarships/Alaska_Performance_Scholarship.
We want all of our students to qualify for this scholarship. To help with this goal we are scheduling students based on the qualification for the APS. If a student doesn't want to qualify for this scholarship, both the student and parent will have to talk to me first. As a principal, I want to make sure that they are aware that they are giving up money for college by not taking a specific class.
Remember, my office is always open and I appreciate hearing your opinions or suggestions. I am making it my goal to be more responsive to what our parents and community want and need. Please give me a call or come in and chat.
Sincerely,
Douglas Waclawski
Principal

Highly Qualified Teachers
Dear Parents:
I hope that your child is having a great year at Homer High School. Our teachers have worked hard for many years to prepare themselves for the challenging and rewarding role of providing a quality education for your child.
To that end, I wanted to share with you that our teachers have met all the criteria established by the State of Alaska’s Department of Education and Early Development, as well as the criteria established by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, to obtain their teaching credentials and hold a teaching position with our school district.
In addition, the teachers listed below have acquired the “highly federally qualified” designation required under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. This is a wonderful accomplishment . You are welcome to request, through your principal, information about the professional qualifications of your child’s teacher.
