Holiday Longhorn Store

Each year, Mrs. Wilkins puts together a Holiday Longhorn Store with new and gently used items donated by AMS staff and a few outside friends. These items range from home decor to jewelry, to clothing and shoes, games, toys, purses - pretty much anything you can think of! Students have the opportunity at lunch each day from December 6 - 10 to spend their Longhorn Bucks on items in the store. If the students are buying gift items, we also set up a gift wrapping station so they can bring the item home without giving the gift away. This is always a HUGE hit with the kiddos, and I know they have been saving up their Longhorn Bucks to be able to go shopping!

STAR Basket Raffle

Each year, every STAR teacher puts together a gift basket for our STAR basket raffle. These are brand new items that range from candy, snacks, and soda to fuzzy blankets, fishing poles, bikes, and more. Students can purchase raffle tickets at a cost of $0.25 each or 5 for $1.00. Tickets will be available for purchase the week of December 13 - 16 at lunch, and we will pull the winning tickets during our holiday assembly on Friday, Dec. 17. ALL of the money raised in this raffle goes right back to AMS families in need during the holidays in the form of grocery gift cards. The students bring in a large amount of money each year, and we so appreciate their generosity!

Reading, Math, & Behavior Screeners

ALL AMS students will take the second in a yearlong series of three reading, math, and behavior assessments via Fastbridge during the first week of December. The math screener will be taken during the students' regular math classes, and the reading screener will occur during Literature classes. These screeners are used to determine students' level of ability in reading and math and placement in any MTSS intervention or enrichment groups. We encourage students to perform as well as they possibly can so we can get accurate data regarding their needs. Please also encourage this at home. Sometimes, students unfortunately don't try their best on an assessment that doesn't have a grade attached, and then they are unhappy with their MTSS group placements. Thank you in advance for working as part of the team in your student's education.

Music Department Concerts

AHS Jazz Band and Singers will perform for us at 2:30 on Friday, December 3 in the AMS Commons

AMS Christmas Vespers Vocal Concert is Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 7:00pm. The performers will rehearse during hours 6, 7 and STAR on Tuesday, December 14 and again from 8-9:15 on Dec. 15. This concert will combine the AMS and AHS vocal students to perform beautiful holiday music - both secular and sacred. This concert will also feature a 4th/5th grade "honor" choir! An added bonus will be the "Singers Christmas Market" which will be open before and after the concert. AHS students will have baked goods/craft items for sale to raise funds for their trip to NYC in March. Plan to pick up some last minute Christmas gifts to support these awesome kids!

7th & 8th grade vocal students will tour Abilene's retirement and nursing communities mid-day on Thursday, Dec. 16

AMS Band Concert is Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2:00. Band students will rehearse during the day on Friday, Dec. 10.

Thank you to everyone who supported our AMS all-school fundraiser. The students earned over $5,000 for our student activity fund! This is a HUGE help in providing awesome opportunities for our students each year.

The items will be in the second week of December, and if that changes, I will let you know.

Kansas Communities that Care Survey

We are getting ready to administer the annual Kansas Communities that Care Survey during the second week of December. During enrollment, you either agreed to allow your student to participate or you marked "not allow", but I want to make sure you know that the survey is upcoming in case you have any questions about the survey. Students take it anonymously online, and the surveys will be completed in Science classes in 6th and 8th grade. The teachers will read the questions and answer options out loud and have a clarification document from the state that provides additional clarification for students who are not sure how to answer. Please email Mrs. Delay at if you would like additional information.

Leadership Teams

Students have been working diligently in their leadership teams to bring awesome new projects to AMS. Here's what they are working on:

Library leadership - started a "Masked Reader" interactive bulletin board in the main hallway

Uplift leadership - implemented hygiene boxes in the ladies restrooms and has been selecting the Uplifting Students of the Week

Kindness leadership - working on a Kindness Raffle to recognize students choosing to be kind - however, this is a secret from the students and only teachers can nominate a winner - because the students want to truly honor students for being kind on their own, without a motivation ;)

Elementary Pals leadership - made cards for K-1 students and visited Kennedy for lunch/recess

Birthday leadership - have all the birthday signs caught up for teacher birthdays; have birthday cards ready for student birthdays in December and will begin working on supplies for January

Builder's Club leadership - working on a service project implementation

Sister City leadership - sent letters to the middle school students in our Sister City - Omitama, Japan explaining Halloween and Thanksgiving and included some American candy for them to taste. Next, they are working on Christmas ornaments to share

Trivia leadership - working on collecting trivia questions from all content areas to use with Scholar's Bowl (prepare for competitions)

Thank you for your donations!

The Uplift Leadership Team would like to thank you all for your hygiene product donations! We have received tons of support, and we are THRILLED with the ability to provide supplies for students. THANK YOU!
