A Scholarship Opportunity for Juniors!
The Masonic Educational Council annually recognizes outstanding members of the Junior Class at each Whatcom County public high school. Any junior may enter the competition by completing the on-line application. https://www.whatcommec.org/
The top five boys and top five girls from each high school will be chosen to attend the awards program, along with their families, in April. Scholarships of $600 will be awarded to the top student at each high school and $1,500 to the top boy and top girl in Whatcom County. The deadline for the application is early March 9th.
College Bound Student Support and 9th Grade Repledge
The College Bound Scholarship was established in 2007 to provide state-funded financial aid to low-income students who may not consider college due to the cost. Students completed the application during 7th or 8th grade. (For more information regarding the scholarship: http://www.wsac.wa.gov/college-bound.)
We have been collaborating with Futures NW again this year to give our Sehome College Bound Students extra support. Bianca Leon, WWU Senior, is at Sehome 2-3 days a week and has been helping seniors with FASFA/WASFA and other college-related questions.
Transfer Process
Below are frequently asked questions regarding our transfer process.
Bellingham Public Schools has 22 outstanding schools and a variety of special programs to meet the needs of our families and students. We are confident that our families, students, and staff make strong connections and build meaningful communities, regardless of which school they attend.
Whether you are transitioning into elementary, middle or high school or changing schools due to new attendance areas, we believe each transition can be a positive experience. Our district staff, principals and school staff are here to assist you to help meet your child’s needs.
Can you explain the transfer request process? What are the considerations?
Requests for in-district transfers can be submitted anytime, but priority is given to those received between Feb. 15 and March 1 for the following school year.
Fill out and submit this form electronically or print and submit to the main office of the school you are requesting to attend.
Factors we consider when making a decision about a transfer request include a financial, educational, safety or health condition affecting the student; proximity to a parent’s place of work or childcare; parent/guardian is a district employee and other special circumstances.
That said, our expectation is that families and students follow the plans as they are laid out for fall 2021 (middle school changes and some elementary) and fall 2022 (some elementary changes).
Are there any factors families should be aware of before requesting a transfer?
Requests are approved based on space and capacity.
Families are responsible for their own transportation for transferred students.
Transfer requests are reevaluated every year and placement is not guaranteed.
Because we need to evaluate enrollment numbers prior to accepting new transfers, we may not be able to provide a response to a request until right before, or even right after the start of the school year.
My child has a sibling who attended the school in our old attendance area. Does that help my chances of getting my transfer request approved?
We consider siblings currently enrolled at a school and want to keep siblings together. However, if older siblings no longer attend that school, it would not be a contributing factor for approval.

2020 Census
Did you know that April 1, 2020 is Census Day?
The U.S. Census Bureau will send you an invitation to respond online to the 2020 Census between March 12-20. Responding to the Census helps our community get its fair share of funding. Census data guides how more than $675 billion in federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year for schools, health care facilities, roads, transportation, recreation centers, social services and more.
Starting in March 2020, everyone living in your home needs to be counted. That includes children and newborn babies, citizens and non-citizens, relatives and nonrelatives, and even those staying with you temporarily. You can complete the Census online, by phone or by mail. Your responses are safe and secure. The law requires the U.S. Census Bureau to keep your information confidential, and your responses cannot be used against you in any way.

Scrip & PTSA Auction
As we wrap up Scrip sales, the PTSA, and and Scrip Officers would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Sehome families! Your continued support of the program has allowed PTSA to support virtually every single class, sport, club, and activity at Sehome. Scrip ran successfully for many years. In the last three years alone, it generated $47,000 in profits. The money has gone back to Sehome, supporting our students and staff. SHS PTSA loves to generously support our school, but will need your help now that this program has come to an end. Please mark you calendar for the Sehome Auction, on Saturday, May 16th. The annual auction is the ONLY way that the PTSA raises money to provide support for our Sehome community.
Thank you in advance,
Samantha & Deanne
