Student Focused-World Class
Word for the Warrior...
This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. It is a great time to reflect on why you made the decision to be an educator. I want to thank each of you for your contribution to our school. Each of you brings a different perspective, approach, personal history, and strength. As they all come together, we become a force that through a vision for what is best for children, a focus on success, and a reckless optimism for the difference we can make, works interdependently to change young lives. I am so proud of you and thankful for who we are becoming as a school. As always- I am proud to be a WARRIOR!

If both adoptive parents are teachers, only one (1) parent is entitled to apply sick leave.
ART SHOW
It's that time of year again. The subject tells it all. If you could please make your students aware of the Art Show next week, I would greatly appreciate it. Some of them have work in it, and I am unable to tell every student that has had my class throughout the year. Also, please let them know that they will be welcome to come get their work THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. If you would like to accompany a group of your students to come down and see it during Tribe Time, you are more than welcome to do so!
Thank you,
Hunter Hilton
Tyler's Light
Teachers,
On May 8th, we will have a national speaker coming to speak with our students about drug education and awareness. The program is through an organization called Tyler's Light (http://tylerslight.com/) and is based on personal experience. It is sponsored by United Way and is being presented to several local schools. I was able to see this presentation when they were at DB earlier this year. It was very powerful.
So, here are the details for the presentation:
- May 8th, 10-11am in the auditorium
- 7th and 8th grade only
- Related Arts teachers - Please bring your 2nd period (1st related arts class) to the auditorium at 9:50
- 7th grade teachers - Please report to the auditorium by 10:30 so related arts teachers can be dismissed
- 8th grade teachers - You will run on the 6th grade schedule this day. Please bring your 2nd period to the auditorium at 9:45.
- During reading time:
- Students need to complete a survey. The information has been loaded in to the Counseling Center Google Classroom as an assignment. The survey can also be found at the bottom of the Tyler's Light website.
- Codes for CC Google Classroom, if needed - 7th grade: m4713c - 8th grade: c4sjlqu
- 6th grade teachers - You will not be attending but will need to run on the 8th grade schedule this day.

Congratulations to Balu Pushkas-Duke TIP Talent Search Award Recipient
Balu Pushkas is a 7th grade student in JSMS. Balu participated in Duke TIP 7th grade talent search this year and took SAT exam in October 2017 and qualified for state recognition by getting qualifying marks in both English (610) and Math ( 540). He took ACT in April 2018 and just found out that he scored a composite of 26 with a 31 in reading which qualifies him for DUKE TIP grand recognition this year. He will a state medal and grand medal to him after May.
"Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search identifies students across the United States who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level standardized test. As part of the program, these academically talented students take above-level college-entrance exams to learn more about their abilities. Duke TIP then hosts annual recognition ceremonies to honor the seventh graders with remarkable ACT or SAT scores. Those with the highest scores are invited to the Grand Recognition Ceremony. Of 48,569 students who took the exams through Duke TIP—all of whom are in the 95th percentile of their grade level—only 2,611 were invited to the Grand Recognition Ceremony."]
