The Cue
CPS Fine Arts, Vol.1 Issue 10 - Nov. 5th, 2018
Short Week - Great Work
Last Thursday was a great day with elementary fine art teachers and I am looking forward to a great day today with secondary fine art teachers. Election day is tomorrow and with the calendar cleared we can all take a moment to exercise or civic duties.
Then a powerful three days with students. Make each second and every teachable moment count.
As we continue to move towards a refined mission and vision for fine arts, a couple of thoughts stood out to me in my recent study of the book "Opening Doors: An Implementation Template for Cultural Proficiency." This work will ask us to consider change and as we develop the supporting strategic plan, almost certainly demand some level of change.
"In reality, active or passive resistance to change in ways that affords all students
access to higher levels of learning occurs in our schools and serves to foster values,
behaviors, policies, and practices characterized as being destructive, incapacitating, or unseen."
-Opening Doors-Chapter 2 Consideration of the Framework
As we consider this, we have to actively participate and make the concerted effort not to stand in the way of those changes that can bring meaningful learning and growth to and for our students. We can only do this if our mission and vision accomplish the following.
"...as we all know, vision and mission statements and their derived core values
are functional only to the extent that they serve as a compass that leads to action."
-Opening Doors-Chapter 2 Consideration of the Framework

The Theme that says..."You want to be significant in the eyes of other people."
In the truest sense of the word, you want to be recognized. You want to be heard and known. In particular, you want to be known and appreciated for the unique strengths you bring. You are an independent spirit, you want your work to be a way of life rather than a job, and in that work, you want to be given free rein, the leeway to do the thing your way. Your yearnings feel intense to you, and you honor those yearnings. And so your life is filled with goals, achievements or qualifications that you crave. Whatever your focus - and each person is distinct - your Significance theme will keep pulling you upward, away from the mediocre toward the exceptional. It is the theme that keeps you reaching.
Power and Edge
The genius of people with strong Significance begins and ends with the difference that they are determined to make. They want the world to be a better place because they are in it.

If this is me...
- Significant people do important things. Imagine the legacy you want to leave. Picture yourself at retirement, looking back on a life that has made the world a better place. What will you have done to get there?
- Make a list of the goals, achievements, and qualifications you crave, and post them where you will see them every day. Use this list to inspire yourself.
- If you perform best when given independence, share that insight with your manager/supervisor. Be ready to give examples of how you have succeeded with that kind of freedom. After recognizing the value of this insight, your manager/supervisor likely will give you the space you need to create exceptional results.
- Stay focused on performance. Your strong Significance theme will drive you to claim outstanding goals.
- Write down your strengths and refer to them frequently. Heightened awareness of your strengths will you the confidence you need to rebound when, for whatever reason, your "audiences" are not giving you the feedback you need.
- You value appreciation and affirmation. Tell the significant people in your life how important their feedback and support are to you. Their words can be very motivational.
Information Regarding Attendance Area Changes
Please help spread the message that no decisions regarding boundaries have been made and that the work is just beginning. Changes of these sorts can always make people nervous. As teachers and employees of the district, we are our friends and neighbors direct access to the most accurate information.

Congratulations
So excited that the Missourian covered the Opera Workshop from last week. If you haven't had a chance to check out this article you should give it a quick read.
The board office art show changes this week. Thank you to those teachers whose show is just finishing (Michele Garcia, Barb Barlow, VaLynda Carter, and Rebecca Stuart). Thank you to those who are working right now to share (Megan Gordon, George Szabo, Emile Carter, Carol Stoddart, Fran Lakatos, Lydia Clark, and Rachel Leach) the talents of their students. The following elementary schools will have student work displayed through Nov. 7th through Dec. 7th: Benton, Cedar Ridge, Midway, Paxton, Ridgeway, Two Mile, Rock Bridge, Shepard
Holiday Performances at the Columbia Mall
The holiday season is sneaking up on us….
Please share these opportunities with Music and Band for the annual mall events that are looking for musical performances:
- Santa’s Welcome Party – November 17 - We would love to recruit a marching band or drum line to help us parade in Santa Claus this year! We were hoping we could find some musicians that would be available on the 17th between about 9:45am – 10:05am to walk with Santa from the Target wing down to the Dillard’s wing and play some upbeat, maybe even holiday themed music. This would probably only take 5 minutes or so for the actual walk. We wouldn’t need a whole band either, just enough to make some noise and let people know Santa is coming. The band could even stop at the Santa set and play a song or two and then march out if they want a little more time sharing their talent.
- Sounds of the Season Weekend – December 14, 15 and 16 – We are bringing back our magical musical weekend for the holidays. We would love to invite the school choirs and bands to perform at the mall during this weekend at a time that fits best with their schedules. The performances will again be in the Dillard’s wing (however the Santa Set is relocating to H&M Court so the performances will be closer to Dillard’s).
