EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COURSE SELECTION
What classes does my child take?
All students take an advisory class, core classes and elective classes during the 7-period day at Heaton Middle School.
ASAP (Advisory)
AVID Success Advisory Period is designed to help students be successful every day! All students learn and implement AVID strategies, maintain interactive notebooks, take Cornell notes, and other activities to start each day off right! Students also must arrive on time, dress for success, and maintain an organized binder and agenda book.
CORE CLASSES
Core classes include Pre-AP Math, Pre-AP English Language Arts, Pre-AP Science, and Pre-AP Social Studies. We also offer Pre-Algebra and Algebra.
ELECTIVE CLASSES
Heaton offers a variety of elective courses. The course descriptors give a thorough explanation of each course.
OTHER CLASSES
Heaton offers intervention and resource courses for students. Students are scheduled based on academic need and individual programming needs.
How does course selection work? How do I know what my child requested?
Here are the course selection sheets students will use for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade going into the next school year to select elective classes. When selecting courses at school, all students complete both a paper and electronic copy. A duplicate of the paper copy is sent home.
Incoming 6th grade students
Incoming 6th grade students complete their course selection sheet at our annual Enrollment Night. If you missed out, please contact your child's counselor directly to
make your course selections for next school year. You may also download and submit your child's course selection to the school or come directly to the school to complete a paper copy. Counselors will schedule your child in his/her requested courses.
Current Heaton students moving to 7th or 8th grade
Current Heaton students moving on to 7th or 8th grade complete their course selection sheets during ASAP (AVID Success Advisory Period) in March, 2016. If your child was absent, counselors will meet with your child individually to complete his/her course selection and send a duplicate home.
New Heaton students
Welcome to Heaton Middle School! If you are new to the area or enrolling in the summer, please download and submit your child's course selection to the school or come directly to the school to complete a paper copy. Counselors will schedule your child in his/her requested courses.
