"Reach Every Student Every Day"

First Week of School!

I cannot believe that we have already completed the first week of school already. What a wonderful week it was! I have enjoyed all of the kids and can't wait to get to know more about them as the year goes on! We had a great week filled with lots of fun challenges and activities. You will find some pictures of those activities below!

I hope your child has had a great first week of school as well. We will be starting our regular routines with Math, Science, Reading, etc. this next week. Please check their planners for any homework that might come home. I do not typically send homework that is additional work just to be completed at home. If your child has homework, it is probably just to finish what didn't get completed during the day. I do not require a reading log but I do encourage students to read nightly. Students that read just 20 minutes a night show significant improvements over students that do not read. It is my goal to help all students find a book that they love and to hopefully develop a passion for reading!

Students will also keep a spelling list in their folders at all times. Spelling tests are on Fridays and the first one is next week. They already have their list and can start studying over the weekend!

"Breaking Out"

Solo Cup Challenge

Coding with Ozobots

Schedule Rotations

If you child hasn't mention this to you yet, we are using both 5th grade teachers to departmentalize this school year. All 5th graders will have Science/Spelling with Mrs. Johnson and Math with me. This is really exciting for the kids as it gives them a chance to get a feel for what Middle School will be like, and it is a great opportunity for the teachers to meet all of the students! If you have any questions, please let me know! If you need to reach Mrs. Johnson, you can email her at Lexi.Johnson@k12.sd.us.

Homecoming Days

Next week is already Homecoming Week! We will be celebrating our Bulldog Pride with dress up days each day. Below is the list of dress up days for the week.

  • Tuesday - Tropical
  • Wednesday - Class Color - BLUE for 5th Grade
  • Thursday - Patriotic/America Day
  • Friday - Bulldog Spirit Day (Maroon/Gold)

Remind App

If you haven't signed up for our class reminders via the Remind app or Remind website, I strongly urge you to do so ASAP! You can sign up by accessing the link below or by texting @HOJE to 81010. It will be very helpful and beneficial to have all parents connected to our class Remind! Thank you!

Scholastic Book Orders

Book orders were sent home on Thursday with the students. They are due back on Friday, Sept. 7th. Students are by no means required to order any books! If you choose to, you can order online at http://scholastic.com/bookclub with our class code HY289. Every order helps our class earn points that we can use to buy books for our classroom! There are a lot of great ones in the 3 flyers that went home!

Donors Choose

Our 5th grade classes will be reading the book Refugee this fall in part with The Global Read Aloud. The Global Read Aloud connects readers from all around the world. Students read the same book at the same time and discuss the story with others around the world. We always connect with a 5th grade class from Texas, but will possibly connect with a few others as well! We have a Donors Choose project set up to help us all get a copy of the book. The program kicks off in October. If you know of anyone that might be wanting to donate to our project, please share the link! Thanks!
