To Kill a Mockingbird
By Harper Lee
Setting
Maybury, Alabama. A southern town in the early 1930s, full of pride, prejudice, and segregation.
Summary
Scout Finch, a young girl, in the town of Maycomb, Alabama, has lead a relatively normal childhood. Until her father, Atticus Finch, the town lawyer, is given the seemingly impossible task of defending an innocent black man, accused of raping a white woman.
The Characters
Scout Finch
The young daughter of a lawyer and the narrator of the story. Scout, being a child, is naturally a naïve character and provides an interesting point of view for the story.
Atticus Finch
The main protagonist of the novel, Atticus is a widower , a father, and a strong thinker. He is forced to make major decisions throughout the story. He also must protect his children from the dangers of the world. Throughout the novel defending Robinson becomes less about the job and more about his personal beliefs.
Tom Robinson
Tom Robinson is an innocent African American man who was charged with the false claims of raping a white woman.
Review
I would recommend To Kill a Mockingbird to those around the ninth grade. The characters were interesting and the story was both enjoyable and held a very important meaning about equality and the importance of treating others without prejudice.
