It's Fun Run Time!!!

We’re less than a week away from kicking off the Claxton Elementary FUN RUN! This is one of our two biggest fundraisers of the year. Our goal is to raise $25,000 for cultural enrichment programs, field trip scholarships, teacher appreciation, books, and supplies for the classroom, and we need your help !!!

Our 2-week fundraising program kicks off with a Pep Rally on Monday, September 24. Look for a Pledgebook to come home that day so your family can start getting pledges for your student. We want this to be fun and easy for everyone, so think of others who can support your student as they run laps to help our school. And don’t forget to save the Fun Run Date—Thursday October 4 at Memorial Stadium in downtown Asheville. You’re invited to come out and cheer on our students! Thank you for supporting Claxton!

We need volunteers at the Fun Run to serve water, mark laps as students run, and cheer on our CLX Leaders! Sign up here to help for an hour shift: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1od0IVzGdY8y1_NUogelMhSyHWyHUR2QE4pUwlb-4uCI/edit?usp=sharing

Hurricane Florence Relief Drive

Claxton's Student Lighthouse Team wants to help! Claxton is collecting items for a relief drive that is sponsored by UNCA. Items will be shared with those who have been impacted by Hurricane Florence. You can drop off items at Claxton between now and Oct 2 and our Student Lighthouse Team will be helping with the collection. Please contribute new, unopened items only. Needed items include non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, baby supplies (diapers, food--no glass, please), bedding, clothing (socks and underwear), pet food, and hygiene items.

Classroom Wishes and Needs

Book Leveling Help: If you're excited to kick off the school year volunteering for Claxton and might still be waiting for a Level II training or for approval of your background check, we have a current volunteer need that does not have these requirements. Our teachers have classroom libraries with books arranged according to reading level. Several of our teachers would love to have help with organizing their libraries by level. This task involves scanning the bar code on books into a database/app and then categorizing the books into levels. Having volunteers complete this task would be a tremendous support to our teachers! Please email miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you can help!

5th Grade 1-on-1 Volunteer: Our 5th grade teaching team is looking for volunteers to work with students one-on-one to support a range of needs in the classroom. The time commitment is flexible but it would be great if a volunteer had a few hours per week to offer for several months or for the year. Volunteers need to have a current background check and must have attended a Level II ACS training. Please email miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you can help!

Room Reps Still Needed!

Room Reps are still needed in several of our Claxton classrooms, so please consider taking on this role for your student’s class! The intended role of the Room Rep is to help distribute important information via email to all class families regarding class and PTO events. We want every family to be informed about events and allowed the opportunity to volunteer at Claxton. The Room Rep also collaborates with the classroom teacher regarding class needs, which may include extra supplies, snacks, or volunteers for class events.

Room reps are still needed for the following classes:

3rd: Conti and Seimer

5th: Autrey

Are you interested in being a room rep this year? If so, please contact Amanda Pattanayak at alsevigny@aol.com or at (617) 953-0855 as soon as possible.

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer! https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule. All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

Please Complete Survey for Possible CLX Family Information Sessions

Digital Lead Teacher, Ms. Eggett, is collecting data from stakeholders concerning internet safety. If you attended the Open House/Ice Cream Social, you may have already filled this out. If you didn't, she would appreciate it if you could take the time to give her input for a possible family information session. She is also co-chair of the Claxton Social Justice League and included a few feedback questions on the survey. Thank you in advance! https://goo.gl/forms/8uYx0FchnpiN2t932
