Healthy friendships are important for teen mental health
They can also help increase our sense of belonging, improve our self-confidence and help reduce stress and anxiety. In fact, studies have shown that “those who enjoy close friendships over their teenage years have a lower rate of depression or anxiety later in life" according to Mental Health First Aid.

How to Improve the Relationship with Your Teen
It's no surprise that a safe and supportive relationship between parents and teens is critical for the well-being of our youth. However, as children grow up, sometimes it can be hard to know the best way to support them. The following tips are a great starting point for growing that important connection:
1. Provide active listening rather than going into "fix-it" mode
Often times when a teen shares a challenge or difficulty, parents immediately want to support with ideas about how to address the concern. While this can be tempting, often times it leads to frustration and the teen feeling unheard. Instead of jumping to fix the situation, can be more beneficial to listen and validate your child's feelings.
2. Take an interest in their life
As teens get older, they often naturally begin to spend more time focused on their own interests and time with friends rather than family. A great way to get back to quality time with your teen is to find ways to connect based on how they prefer to spend their time. Ask questions about their friends, interests, favorite music, tv shows, etc. It's a bonus if you can find ways to share in these interests with them, such as having a favorite show you watch together.
3. Catch your child doing something right
Teens can be very sensitive to critical feedback and especially value approval from their parents. While of course it is your job to provide guidance when they make mistakes, they also need to hear when they are doing things right. Providing positive recognition of them engaging in expected and appropriate behaviors can go a long way in reinforcing the positive behaviors and increases positive interaction! We recommend aiming for the magic ratio of 5 positive interactions for every 1 constructive piece of feedback.
