J. Edgar Hoover was named director of the Bureau in 1924. He became known for secretly looking over the activities of organizations that were considered subversive, including the Black Panthers, the Socialist Workers Party and, the Ku Klux Klan. He also was an assistant in the alien registration section of the Department of Justice during World War 1. Hoover remained in power until his death in 1972.

Corruption

It wasn’t until after his death in 1972, right before the beginning of the Watergate scandal, that Hoover’s corruption became known. He was found to have exceeded the jurisdiction of the FBI, and he used the FBI to harass political dissenters and activists, and to collect evidence using illegal methods.
