Wisdom from the Queen Bee Mrs. Starlin
Teaching kids responsibility (source: Barzvil)
Provide structure and routine- kids thrive on order. Instead of rewards for meeting expectations, set up morning routines with a positive result at the end. For example, after eating breakfast, brushing teeth and getting dressed you could play a game. A younger child may not view these routine tasks as responsibilities, but creating a structure will give your child tools for developing strategies for getting homework done in the future without nagging. Set up a school night routine. Set up a bedtime routine: bath, brush teeth, story time. Three tasks at a time works well with 5 and 6 year-old kids.
The new author study this week in the library is James Dean. He is the author of the Pete the Cat books. Share a book together this weekend.
"Weather" or not we play
Outside Recess Policy-From the Elementary Handbook
All students will go outside unless the temperature is deemed too cold by a combined temperature and wind chill of 20 or below, or it is raining. Please make sure your child dresses for the weather. If a student needs to stay indoors due to an illness, a doctor’s note is required. Please remember winter weight coats, hats, and gloves for your child. *Individual buildings may choose to keep students inside above 20 degrees at the discretion of the building Principal or designee based on the scheduled length of time of the outside recess, age of the students, and condition of the playground.
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Tucker
We've had a lot of fun with our Red Ribbon Week activities and spirit days. I have some amazing art from our art contest as well. But truly this week is about introducing the drug free message. According to the official red ribbon week website, children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations. Talking to your children about drugs, alcohol, and tobacco starts early. Teaching them the basics now will help open the doors for conversations later. Don’t assume that your child knows something – be a positive voice in your child’s life. Some ideas of what to talk about include how to be safe with medicines, how alcohol and tobacco can hurt your body, and doing the right thing if a friend asks you to do something wrong. Let’s make our responsibilities to talk with our teens easier by talking with our children now.

Health Matters
Cold & Flu Season is Here!
It's that time of year when we start to see illnesses in students increase. Remember to keep encouraging good hygiene with your student. Hand washing is key! Please keep your child home until they have been fever, vomiting, or diarrhea free for 24 hours without medicine before returning them to school.
