Mrs. Bennett's First Grade Class

Math

We will be continuing/reviewing our unit on place value. Some children are ready to test and some are still learning about place value and comparing numbers. If your child is ready to test, they will then move on to adding and subtracting numbers within 100.

Feel free to have your child explore my website to watch videos and play games to help them master these concepts.

We will also be focusing on fluency of math facts to 10. Many students have mastered addition and subtraction to 20, but not fluency to 10. Please take any free time you have (in the car, etc) to help your child memorize their math facts of addition and subtraction to 10. Thank you!

Spelling

Spelling website: www.bigiqkids.com The login is cbennett.pe and the password is 1234. There are fun games to help your child practice the weekly words.

Since it is only a 3 day week, we will be reviewing our cheater words so far.

small, call, are, do, from, his, have, the, to, their, they, was, who, what

Writing

We will be learning how to do research and writing informative / explanatory texts. They need to be able to write an introductory sentence, some facts about the topic, and a closing sentence.

Sight Words

We are now working on 3rd Quarter words. If your child has not passed 2nd Quarter words, please keep practicing those. Please help your child read their sight words. They cannot sound out the words. They have 2 1/2 minutes to read all 50 words.

Reading Skills

We are working comprehension of non-fiction texts.

We are working on several skills:

ask and answer questions while reading informational texts

explain the reasons an author gives to support points

identify the similarities and differences between two informational texts

know if the information came from the words or the photographs

identify the main idea and key details

Reading / Phonics

We are learning that the c makes the /s/ sounds when it is followed by an e, i, or y.

You can really help by going over Vowel Town with them. (This is in their Goal Notebook). Point to different places on it and have your child say the sound and then do the same thing, but have them spell the sound.

Some groups have began the rivers and ladders. The rivers have the vowels written out along a river graphic. They have to be able to say the sounds to the vowel letters quickly and correctly to keep from "falling into the river". If you would like copies of the rivers to practice at home, just let me know. This is difficult if they have not truly master Vowel Town. The ladders take it a step farther. They have to be able to identify the vowel(s) in a word and only say the vowel sound for given words.

Science

We are learning about sound waves. We will be reading books, watching videos, and doing experiments over the next couple of weeks.
