What is Amniocentesis ?
Amniocentesis is a prenatal test or sampling of amniotic fluid using a hollow needle inserted into the uterus, to screen for developmental abnormalities in a fetus. The test is performed to look for certain types of birth defects, such as Down syndrome which is a chromosomal abnormality . Amniocentesis doesn't detect all birth defects. Amniocentesis affects the mother by causing cramps and pain , brings trauma to the baby . The risks of an Amniocentesis are possibly causing a miscarriage or injury to the mother or baby . Obviously if the Amniocentesis comes out positive then the baby has a birth defect.
