A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Luther Burbank Families,

Luther Burbank is BUSY! The cast for our spring musical, Seussical, Jr., has been announced, our musical ensembles will perform at our annual Winter Concert tomorrow evening, and our boys' and girls' basketball teams will travel to Bolton for their season opener with Florence Sawyer on Thursday afternoon.

We are also in the throes of friendly competition with the Hale Middle School to see which school community can donate the most non-perishable food items to support the WHEAT center in Clinton. To ensure our school's victory, we have "sweetened" the competition just a bit for our students. Grade levels will compete against one another to bring in the most items. The winning grade will see one of their teachers be pied in the face! And, not to be outdone, if (and when) LBMS ultimately does defeat Hale, Mr. Grant and I have both announced that we will also take one for the team - or take a pie in the face, that is. So, please send your child into school with a non-perishable food item or monetary donation for a good cause (and some laughter to be had, for sure)!

As we wind up to wind down, I hope that everyone enjoys the well-deserved winter break around the corner. During the break, I encourage everyone - students, staff, and families - to do their best to relax and take time to pause. It has been wonderful to resume our "normal" schedule and have our community back together again after all of the challenges our community has faced as a result of the pandemic. Yet, normalcy brings busyness. While the busyness is much appreciated, it will be nice for our community to be able to stop and catch their collective breath. Please enjoy the time.

With much gratitude during this holiday season,

Laura

A Little Bit of This and That...

Families, please check in with your child to make sure that they are coming to school with a refillable water bottle (filled with water) and an extra mask/face covering. We are happy to help students, when needed, with these supplies. We appreciate your help from the home end, too.

Please, also, remind your child of the necessity of taking good care of their Chromebook. Chromebooks should be transported back and forth to school inside of their Chromebook bag and with intentional care to the device, itself. On any given day, we have approximately 5-10 Chromebooks out for service.

Finally, Mrs. Sama has asked for students to bring in headphones to use with their Chromebooks for engineering class. Thank you!

You're invited to the 2021 Luther Burbank Winter Concert!

The Winter Concert will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, December 14th, at 6:30 pm at the Nashoba Regional High School Auditorium. There is no fee for admission, and we are very excited to finally welcome back our in-person audience. Masks are required for all audience members and performing students for the duration of the event. The Winter Concert will feature the Grade 6 Concert Band, Grade 7/8 Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Chorus, and Honors Wind Ensemble. You can look forward to selections of Irish folk music, Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Tchaikovsky, and music from the musical "Dear Evan Hansen."

Middle School Basketball - Come on Out and Support our Lancers!

This Thursday, December 16th, our boys' and girls' basketball teams will travel to Florence Sawyer for their season opener. On Monday, December 20th, we will host the Hale Middle School for our first home game of the season. The boys will tip off at 3:30 p.m. and the girls will play at 4:45 p.m. Come on out and cheer the boys on at 3:30 p.m. and stay to cheer on the girls at 4:45 p.m. Go Lancers!

First Trimester Report Cards

Trimester 1 report cards will be available for online viewing through PowerSchool Parent Access this Friday. Please be on the lookout for a communication from Mrs. Ursuliak on Friday morning with specific directions on how to view your child's report card online. Progress reports for students with IEP's and for our English learners will also be shared on Friday.

Honor roll names will be printed in the Clinton Item in the near future. Please be on the lookout!

Routine COVID Safety Check Testing, Wednesdays

Routine COVID Safety Check Testing at Mary Rowlandson and Luther Burbank is in full swing each Wednesday. Safety Check Testing is quick and occurs during student lunch periods. This opt-in pooled testing program adds another layer of protection for our school community. Routine COVID safety checks minimize disruption to learning by helping us catch potential spread of the virus before it starts.

Please refer to Superintendent Downing's Friday weekly email sent to families for more information about the program and to provide consent for your child to participate.

5th Annual Reindeer Games... The Tradition Continues!

Next Wednesday afternoon, we will send students off to winter break with our 5th Annual Reindeer Games! We have made some adjustments to this year's Reindeer Games to support our COVID protocols, but the afternoon is sure to be a lot of fun. This year's Reindeer Games provides advisory groups with 6 different activities, including a very special event in the gymnasium.

The NRHS Holiday Concert is Coming!

Time to get in the holiday spirit! Come enjoy some fun musical selections at the Nashoba Regional High School in December! The NRHS Bands and Choral groups will perform a Holiday Concert on Wednesday, December 15th at 7 pm in the NRHS auditorium (12 Green Road, Bolton, MA). Admission is $5 per person (seniors and students are free), payable at the door. NRSD concerts are family friendly...younger musicians are especially encouraged to attend. Masks for attendees are required. Come and enjoy music at Nashoba Regional High School!

Interested in Joining us for a Book Club??? It's Not Too Late!

The cold days ahead offer the perfect time to read a good book, right? Our Luther Burbank faculty is very excited to announce this year's Parent/Teacher Book Club title, How to Talk so Teens Will Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish.

Written by best-selling authors, Faber and Mazlish, this book offers a practical resource with easy-to-implement suggestions to help us tackle the tough issues teens and families face today.

Our Book Club will include three virtual meetings scheduled for January 5th, February 2nd, and March 30th from 6:00-7:00 PM via Zoom. The meetings will be informal - simply an opportunity for us to gather together with parents to discuss strategies presented in a very good book.

If you are interested in joining our Book Study, please complete this short survey and we will be in touch. The survey will close on Friday, December 17th.

Winter Attire, Recess, and Mask Breaks

During these times, it has never been more important for our students and staff to be able to get outside for fresh air. With the weather becoming increasingly colder and inclement, it is critical that students come to school with the proper winter apparel. Families, I ask for your help in ensuring that your child arrives to school with a jacket, hat, and gloves/mittens. Layers are perfect.

This year we have continued with our longer recess blocks so that students can benefit from the fresh air and activity. During the winter months, students may elect to play in the snow. In this case, students MUST wear snow boots and snow pants. Thank you for your support with ensuring your child is adequately prepared. We know that sometimes it is tricky to wrangle a middle schooler when it comes to attire, and we appreciate your support from the homefront.
