Isabella's summer
Especially made for Isabella
Summer recommendations
Summer is a time to rest and relax but I also want to avoid the summer slide. The Primer students will be going into first grade with an extra year of school compared to their peers. I want to keep up the rigor by recommending some camps based on interest and need.
Math Camp
Starting in first grade, the math curriculum used until fifth grade is Everyday math. Parish offers a course for first graders on learning games from the program. It would not hurt to get exposure to these before school starts.
July 21-July 25 9:00-12:00
Show them you are more than a princess!
What I love about Goldie Blox is that it combines math, science and building into one! My brother-in-law who is professional engineer (PE) knows the creator of Goldie Blox from his network of PEs. This class is sure to get Isabella thinking on her toes. The class is at Greenhill June 16-20.
Camp Invention
I directed this camp last summer. What I love about this camp is that it is much like my teaching style. Students get to learn and create things. They do not follow a set model; it is truly 21st century learning. Check out the videos to learn more. http://www.youtube.com/user/CampInvention
Camp Invention will be at the Upper Campus July 21-25. Register through ESD Summer Camps or Camp Invention.
Summer Reading
The best advice I can give anyone is to read over the summer. Did you know that your child can get a plethora of prizes just for reading? I have listed below some of my favorites. I will give you a more detailed list at our spring conference. I highly encourage you to "double-dip" in these programs. I would gather all of the logs and then start recording your reading.
Dallas and Highland Park Libraries- Summer Reading
Dallas and Highland Park offer free summer reading challenges. Participants can get tickets to the circus, a summer musical and a Rangers game all for reading.
Barnes and Noble Summer Reading
Go to Barnes and Noble to get the reading log. Read eight books and log them. Turn in the reading log and you will get a free book.
Chuck E. Cheese
Download and print out the Chuck E Cheese Reading Rewards calendar. Mark the days off with a pen or sticker as your child accomplishes their goals. Bring it in completed to Chuck E. Cheeseās and receive 10 free tokens as a reward.
Primer resources
All of the resources used during the school year will be available over the summer. This means you will still have access to:
- Edmodo
- Kidblog
- XtraMath
- Mathletics
- Raz-Kids
