VIEW 2022-23 CALENDAR During the February 28th, Board of Education meeting, the 2022-2023 D123 academic school calendar was approved. Some highlights from the calendar include: The school year will start with two days of staff institutes; August 15th and 16th. The first day of student attendance will be Wednesday, August 17th and will be a half day from 8:30-11:30 am.
The Oak Lawn-Hometown PTA Council will award two $1,000 scholarships in honor of Helen Whalen, a dedicated volunteer in District 123 schools and the PTA many years ago.
On March 1st, Sward students began the March Madness Tournament of Books. Mrs. Keblusek, Sward's Librarian explains: "This Tournament is similar to the March Madness basketball games but played with BOOKS! The event started with the "Sweet 16". These 16 book titles are chosen yearly by teachers from Ohio, Scott Jones and Tony Keefer.
The Kolmar gym was flooded with shouts of "BINGO" and hands raising on Friday night. The PTA was finally able to put on Kolmar's annual Bingo Night after having to postpone it from January to March. It was a full house and families all had a wonderful time!
On March 15, 2022 Hometown Elementary hosted their annual spring concert. This year, the early spring concert included songs from the Hometown Chorus, grade 2 and grade 3. Led by the music teacher, Mrs. Rebecca Hemminger, the students sang songs, played instruments and even choregraphed a routine to different pieces of music.
This past Thursday, Mrs. Hemminger and Mrs. Glikis put on the first ever Early Spring Concert. The concert featured chorus, Mrs. Robert's first grade class, second grade classes and third grade classes. Between first graders painting a rainbow on stage with scarves and second graders singing about the month of March, it really felt like Spring had arrived!
Grade 1 students have been studying the artist Takashi Murakami. Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist. He works in fine arts media as well as commercial and is known for blurring the line between high and low arts. Each student was able to pick out their own background and was able to design and create their own flowers.
After endless hours of practice and countless wins, our 6/7th and 8th grade boys basketball and 8th grade girls volleyball programs all made it to their SWIC Championship game last Saturday, March 12th. For the first time in our school history, we had three teams participating in championship games within the same season!
OAK LAWN, Ill. - Tuesday's lesson at Oak Lawn Hometown Middle School went well beyond the basics of reading, writing and math. It was about looking within to help those who are without their good health. The middle school recently received a $250 grant from The Hershey Company.
