Words From Our Principal
Dear Parents,
I hope all students and staff had a great, restful, and well deserved break. Everyone came back from our two-week break energized and ready to learn. We have had tons of fun with various activities and our students continue to make great strides academically. Some of the activities include two great performances by the Bonita Vista High School Music Machine, the Dual-Language Immersion Student Led conference, our library Book Fair, and our Compact for Success campus visit to San Diego State University. We look forward to continuing working together with parents to ensure the success of all our students. GO CRUSADERS!!!!

Day of the Dead
BVM art students brought the day of the dead alive in art projects using mixed media and a variety of other supplies to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
DLI Student Led Conference
On Thursday October 15th the Dual Language Immersions (DLI) program hosted a student led conference. During the conference the dual language students became the teachers and the parents became the students. This provided an opportunity for the students to teach the parents about a topic that they are learning in their classes and to demonstrate their progress in the development of their Spanish language.

October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month
October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month as declared by Congress on September 25, 2008, here some facts about SCA:
· SCA takes more lives than any other disease or condition in the United States
· Over 300,000 die each year as a result of SCA
· SCA is the #1 killer of student athletes on the playing field
· About 6,000 kids go through an episode of SCA every year
· It can happen to anyone at any time
· SCA may not show any symptoms before the event
· Certain behaviors can contribute to SCA such as consumption of energy drinks, alcohol, and recreational drugs
· About 40% of SCA’s are caused by some kind of cardiomyopathy, Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome or other structural heart issue
· Mortality rate for SCA is between 90%-95%
· Early defibrillation within the first three minutes increases survival rates
What is a heart attack?
A heart attack occurs when a blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart.
What is cardiac arrest?
Sudden cardiac arrest occurs suddenly and often without warning. It is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Death occurs within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment (CPR and Defibrillation).

Breakfast and Lunch For Better Health
Lately, I have had quite a few students coming into the nurse’s office feeling lightheaded and queasy. One of the first questions I ask the students is, “Have you eaten today?” and quite often the answer is no. Most often the students say they have not had time to make breakfast or to pack a lunch, or they have forgotten to add money to their lunch accounts. My suggestion to the students is for them to plan ahead and make time for breakfast and also to pack a lunch the night before school, as well as being responsible for letting their parents know when they may need to add funds to their cafeteria account.
Skipping meals causes many problems for students. We all know that breakfast has been called the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast and lunch provides the energy and nutrients that lead to increased concentration in the classroom, as well as supplying the energy for all of the physical activities required of our students throughout the school day. In addition, when the body goes without a steady supply of calories and nutrients, emotional functioning can be impaired, resulting in irritability and mood swings.
I tell the students that breakfast and lunch need not be fancy; keeping it simple is just fine. Breakfast can be anything quick and easy: a piece of fruit and some yogurt, cereal and banana, a protein shake, or even toast and a glass of milk or juice. Lunch can be a simple sandwich, crackers and cheese with fruit, or even a salad. The ideas are limitless! The important thing is to fuel the body so the mind and the body can have the energy needed for school.
Stay healthy,
