History About The Battle
The Battle of Gettysburg started July 1 and then ended on July 3, 1863 in Pennsylvania. This Battle was fought between the union and the confederate forces During the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg had the most amount of causalities throughout the entire Civil War.
First Day Of The Battle
The first day of the Battle of Gettysburg was on July 1, 1863 between the Northern Army headed by General Robert Lee of Virginia and the Potomac Army under Maj. George G. Meade. It soon became a major battle which ended up defeating Union Forces retreating to the high ground of Gettysburg. This was the first day battle of three phases of armies to arrive at the battle field.
Second Day Of The Battle
During the second day of battle, General Robert E. Lee launched attacks on the Union Army headed by Major General George G. Meade. The Union army had held strong positions but Meade's forces over whelmed the Union army resulting in heavy loses for both sides.The Union Corps were destroyed as a combat organization at Cemetery Ridge. Since Lee's loss of the battle he was still determined to continue fighting as he planned for day three.
Third Day Of The Battle
Day three ( July 3, 1863) had focused on a disastrous assault nicknamed Pickett's Charge. Their were two other significant battles that occurred, one at East Cavalry field and the other at Round Top mountain ( also called South Cavalry Field). The East Cavalry field fighting was an attempt to get the Confederate cavalry into the federal rear and stop any success at Pickets Charge may have generated. At the South Cavalry field, cavalry charges against the Confederate army were easily turned back.
Pickett's Charge
Pickett's Charge happened at the battle of Gettysburg on the third day of the battle. Pickett's charge was an infantry attack ordered by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee against Gen. George G. Meade's Union forces. The charge is named after Maj. Gen. George Pickett one of the three Confederate Generals who led the assault under Longstreet. After the Confederate soldiers attacked both of the Union flanks and failed Lee was determined to strike the Union in the center.
