A Message from Principal Nixon--Week of January 25, 2021
Dear Northwoods Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!! As we prepare to close out the month of January, I want to make you aware of some exciting new parent support and engagement opportunities that will be available throughout the spring semester. Please see the information below.
KOALATea Family Time:
Ms. Helton and Mr. Henderson, our school counselors, have put together a series of family support sessions that are designed specifically for parents. Each session will cover a different topic such as Motivation, Coping Skills, Trauma & Resiliency, etc. Their second session will take place via Google Meet this Thursday (2/11) at 5:30 PM. A full list of KOALATea Family Time topics can be accessed by clicking this link.
If you are interested in attending this Thursday's session, please check out the short informational video and RSVP feature below. We hope to see you there!

Important School Information
Operation Cameras On
Parents, we need your help! Please encourage your child to turn his/her camera on during periods of synchronous (live) instruction. Research has shown that having cameras on during live instruction leads to increased attendance, engagement, and better performance in school. It also allows our teachers to better monitor students, provide real-time feedback, and better differentiate their support.
Kindergarten Registration is Open:
The registration window for the 2021-22 school year is open. Rising kindergarten students must turn 5 years old on or before August 31, 2021 to qualify for enrollment. To register your child for the 2021-22 school year, please visit https://www.wcpss.net/Page/46102.
Virtual Kindergarten Orientation:
We will be offering two virtual kindergarten orientation sessions during February. More information will be sent in the next two weeks.
February 3rd Asynchronous Day:
As a reminder, Wednesday, February 3rd will be the first asynchronous day of the spring semester. Teachers will not be conducting live instruction that day, but students should still access their assignments in Google Classroom. Students must complete the "attendance" assignment to be counted present for the day.
Scholastic Book Fair:
I'm pleased to announce that we will be conducting a virtual book fair this year! The book fair will run from Friday, February 26th through Thursday, March 11th. More details will be shared closer to the event.
AIG Nomination Information:
The AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted) Nomination and Identification process begins in 3rd grade for WCPSS students. Due to COVID-19, there will be no CogAt/IOWA testing which is typically used in partnership with classwork and teacher observations to identify students for the program. Instead, schools will be using a portfolio process to identify students (this includes work samples, Istation and Dreambox data, and historical testing data from last year if applicable).
Third Grade parents do not need to take any formal action at this time; we only ask that students independently complete their daily work and attend live classes via Google Meet. If your child is nominated for the program by a teacher, you will be contacted.
Fourth and Fifth Grade parents may nominate their children until Monday, February 1st, 2021 by completing this form.
