One Band, One Sound: Non-St HOPE Sweaters and Coats
Brrr, it's cold outside! That being said, it is warm and toasty inside AND we have a wonderful selection of long-sleeve polos and St HOPE sweaters. The "one band, one sound" beginning-of-class routine taught in August was: "You have 5 seconds to remove your non-St HOPE sweater..." Following this directive, quietly correct scholars who are not complying. If a scholar still does not comply, then a quiet consequence can be issued, "Incorrect Uniform Sweater."
As a team, we achieved this for the first four weeks of school, observed during each transition when scholars exited classrooms for transition in uniform. As a team, we can do this!

One Band, One Sound: Bathroom Passes and Hallway Movement
As we continue with the same mindset that made the first weeks of school successful, today we will focus on bathroom passes and hallway movement. The hallway is open for movement, only with the classroom's designated blue pass, at the following times: 8:30 to 12 and 1:15 to 3. Scholars may not be in the hallway, even with a pass, outside of these times.
Scholars may use their classroom's designated blue bathroom pass at the following times:
- 2nd Floor: Bottom of the Hour
- 3rd Floor: Top of the Hour
If your classroom lost their pass, please email "Student Support" and indicate the room number and if you need a replacement blue pass and/or a hook for the board. These requests should be minimal, as the majority of classroom passes are still in the same location as when they were installed.
Scholars may NEVER enter the hallway to go to the main office, unless the main office has requested the student, to get a jacket, to get tissues, etc. Please email "Student Support" for urgent requests.

There are seven school days before we dismiss for Thanksgiving. Each year, the days before major holidays and/or breaks from school spark heightened emotional responses. Walk Out and Incorrect Cohort
It is typically around this time of year that scholars begin entering advisory classrooms or academic classrooms that are not their own. We've been "one band, one sound" on the majority of our shared school routines, and we must continue to be "one band, one sound" with this shared school routine, as it does pose a safety risk. Please note:
- If a scholar enters your advisory or classroom and they are not assigned to that advisory or classroom, please ask them to exit your advisory or classroom AND enter "Comment: Incorrect Cohort." The comment can be as simple as: "Scholar entered the wrong advisory or classroom."
- If the scholar refuses to exit, please email "Student Support" and someone will assist.
- If a scholar walks out of class without permission, this is simply a "Walk Out" deduction.
Plan for Friday, November 3rd

Fire Drill on Tuesday, October 24th
The evacuation drill on Tuesday, October 24th was excellent. We evacuated quickly and quietly, and teachers held scholars accountable who made this exercise unsafe. With Spirit Week, scholars will be assigned Responsibility Time over the next few days.
Scholar Movement
...throughout the day improved tremendously. I sincerely appreciate the attention to this, in addition to the evacuation drill. Thank you for continuing to ensure that only one scholar per cohort is in the hallway at a time and that scholars are not sent to look for items, run errands, etc.
Data Day on Monday, October 30th

Birthday Corner
Yesterday was Ms. Rollins' birthday, and we are SO thankful that Hannah is a member of our school community!
Fire Drill
There is a fire drill at 9 a.m. today. The first two evacuation drills were excellent, but the last two evacuation drills were unsafe due to students talking and incorrect traffic patterns. For today, please adhere to the following:
- When you hear the fire alarm, for the safety of our scholars, we must be "one band, one sound." The common message is: "Voices off. Talking is unsafe and will result in automatic Responsibility Time."
- All scholars will exit Stairwell B.
- Upon exiting Stairwell B, CROSS THE STREET FIRST. Do not walk towards 8th Avenue alongside the Yard. Walk to our gathering location using the North side of 134th Street.
- Prior to exiting your classroom grab the "Emergency Folder." These have been updated and are in every classroom.
A deduction has been added to Live School titled "Safety Drill." Any scholar who is talking after the fire alarm should be assigned this deduction and will be assigned Responsibility Time over the next few days.
Hallway Use
Expectations around hallway use are in place to ensure the safety of our students. Please note:
- Only one scholar can exit a classroom at a time, per cohort. As an example, if a scholar is using a bathroom pass, another scholar cannot exit class for a water pass. Water and bathroom both require a pass, and both require that the scholar be added to "the list," and both require adherence to "top of the hour" and "bottom of the hour." If you are 3rd floor teacher, the answer is "no" for all "bottom of the hour requests," bathroom or water. If you are a 2nd floor teacher, the answer is "no" for all "top of the hour requests," bathroom or water.
- If a scholar exits without permission, a "Walk Out" email to "Student Support" must be sent.
- Scholars may not leave a classroom for any other reason unless they are using the bathroom at their designated time and are the only person from their cohort outside of the classroom.
- Scholars may not leave a classroom to: make copies, get copies, look for a broom, get a mask, look for a lost coat, look for a lost breakfast, call a parent, etc. If any of these reasons are cited, email "Student Support."
- Top of the Hour, Bottom of the Hour - One Scholar Per Cohort - Period.

New St HOPE Swag
At the end of last year, we purchased some new St HOPE Swag for our 2023-24 staff and, with the temperatures dropping 20 degrees between now and Monday morning, it's a great time to FINALLY give it away. October and March are hard teaching months in the calendar year. We hope this brings some cheer, along with an early dismissal and a 3-day weekend.
We See You: White, Oguagha, Castro, and Marrero
Each day, we SEE our teaching staff in our classrooms, leading lessons, pulling small groups, writing learning targets and levels of mastery on the board before the day even begins. Teaching is a very visible and rewarding profession. I was reminded of this three times today when former students, all now adults, visited their middle school teachers.
There is also a team that, in addition to SEEING them in our classrooms and supporting our scholars, engage in impactful and life-changing work behind the scenes, doing work that can be unseen. I see their impact in multiple physical altercations that never occurred because they conducted intensive investigations and led amazing peer mediations. I see their impact in multiple suspensions that never were because they led teachers and students through a restorative process. I see their impact when a scholar who, two years ago used to storm out of classes and knock over all desks in their way, calmly and proactively requested a 5-minute break. When you see White, Oguagha, Castro, and Marrero today, say: "I see you. Thank you."

The Power of Positive Narration
Yesterday, I followed City College Periods 1-3 and Periods 6-8. I witnessed Mr. Sheffield, Mr. Madourie, Ms. Fofana, and Ms. Perez utilize a "best practice," that being positive narration. Khadijah even added a personal element, "I see you." Following the teacher's instructions or call to attention (Clap once if... or Eyes on me in 3, 2...), the teacher narrated 2-3 scholars meeting their expectations. "Prince is silent. Zoey is completing her Do Now." The teacher then corrected a few scholars not meeting their expectations but, often, achieved what they wanted following the positive narrations of their expectations. For positive narration, state what you want (voice level and what are students supposed to be doing?). Audibly and calmly narrate 2-3 scholars meeting your expectation. Audibly and calmly correct scholars not meeting your expectations with statements saying "what to do."
The Power of Grade Teams
During my day with City College, I observed the positive impact of several shared routines reinforced by the entire grade team. To name a few:
- 100% of scholars in City College were in uniform 100% of the day I spent with them.
- I heard teachers reiterate "Food is not permitted in class." By the late morning and early afternoon classes, food was not visible in any of the classes I observed.
Bathroom Times
- 2nd Floor 8:30-8:59; 9:30-9:59; 10:30-10:59; 11:30-11:59; 1:30-1:59 and 2:30-2:59.
- 3rd Floor 9:00-9:29 and 10:00-10:29 and 11:00-11:29 and 1:00-1:29 and 2:00-2:29.
- Bathrooms close at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day.

LAST CHANCE: Volunteer Opportunity: Hydroponic Lab Advisor
Do you have a green thumb? Are you passionate about food sustainability and food justice? If you answered "Yes" to one or both of these questions, you might be the right person to be our Hydroponic Lab Advisor. Our community partner, Harlem Grown, will donate a hydroponic farm to St HOPE. We just need an advisor to lead the charge. The hydroponic lab is a narrow stand-alone farm on wheels that grows crops without water. As the advisor, it would "live" in your classroom, and you would be the communication point-person between Ms. Adams and Harlem Grown. Harlem Grown would train you and provide tools to manage it, as well as periodic in-person support with Harlem Grown staff. It is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in incorporating it into their curriculum. Harlem Grown will be fully available for you to lean on for support. If interested, please email Ms. Prat.

If you answered 'Yes" to any of these questions, you just may be the right person to be our Food and Culture Club Advisor. Whaat does this entail, you ask? This will entail a weekly commitment to be present during the Food and Culture Club after school program on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 .m. beginning on October 5, 2023. Compensation would be $55 per Thursday. You would be the communication point-person between Ms. Adams and Harlem Grown to communicate details about programming and activities. The First Day of Fall
Saturday, September 23rd marked the first day of Fall. One week from today, we'll begin another week but in the month of October. This Fall, similar to past years when the flu or a viral infection would surge at various times during the school year, our area is experiencing an uptick in COVID cases. As we navigate this together, it's an opportune moment to revisit parts of our staff handbook reviewed during Returning Teacher Academy:
The general rule of thumb is: If you feel unwell, stay home. Over the course of the year, most staff, depending on when they began, have 10 PTO days that are not differentiated by "sick" or "personal" days. When an absence requires more than two consecutive days, as it currently does with COVID, documentation from a medical professional is required. To use my recent example, I provided both my PCR results and documentation from my doctor designating the number of PTO days that would be required for my diagnosis.
As I say each time I receive notification of a PTO day being used:
Be well, team.

Oh, COVID!
On Wednesday, I developed symptoms of COVID, and yesterday, I tested positive for COVID and, unfortunately, will be absent through next Monday and, symptoms permitting, will return to school on Tuesday, September 26th. While annoying, it was a gentle reminder to share with you that, as part of our district's Safety Plan, we also have a "just in case we need it" plan for remote learning to be used if we have a cluster of COVID cases or experience inclement weather. I will share this schedule with you early next week and will also tuck it away on "The Hub."

Highlighting the "AND" Members of Our School Community
This year, as we navigate, along with other New York City public and charter schools, lower enrollment, we have several "AND" members of our school community. What is an "AND" member, you ask?
An "AND" member of our school community is one who has taken on their role AND another role within our school community. Today, I am specifically celebrating:
- Ms. Marcellino, 6th - 8th Art Teacher AND Physical Education Teacher
- Mr. Fox, 6th - 8th History Teacher AND Physical Education Teacher
- Ms. Wlazelek, Literacy Coach AND 8th Grade ELA Teacher
- Ms. Perez, Director of Student Affairs AND 6th Grade Science Teacher
- Ms. Prat, Assistant Principal AND Physical Education Teacher
- Ms. Sioleski, Director of Special Education AND 6th Grade Lexia Teacher
- Ms. Marseille, Director of Student Support Services AND 6th Grade A3K Teacher
- Mr. Greenspan, Math Coach AND 8th Grade Math Teacher
When I began at St HOPE in 2009, and for several years following, I was also an "AND" teacher. While it pushed me outside of my comfort zone, it also provided me with multiple opportunities to be both a Director of Student Affairs AND walk in the shoes of a Physical Education teacher, a Math teacher, an IXL teacher, and the list went on... To all of our "AND" teachers, I see you, and I am thankful for you.
This afternoon, I had the honor of taking my lunch in Ms. Marcellino's 8th Grade Physical Education class. I witnessed a Coach's Circle, warm-ups complete with jumping jacks and sit-ups, and the beginning of a game before I stepped away to listen to two sides of a conflict. Armed with a sketchbook and a whistle, Ms. Marcellino is an "AND" teacher.

Fire Drill Today at 9 a.m.
Today, our school will conduct its first evacuation drill at 9 a.m. Normally, you will not be notified, but, as promised, you will be notified for this drill to give you an opportunity to prepare scholars. Period 1 teachers will say the following at the beginning of their class: Today, we will have an evacuation drill at 9 a.m. We are required to have 8 evacuation drills per year. When you hear the bell, you are expected to stand up immediately, become immediately silent, and walk towards the St HOPE stairwell WITHOUT taking your backpack. You are permitted to take your coat. Unfortunately, scholars who talk during or an evacuation drill will have Responsibility Time the following day. It is imperative that scholars be silent during a safety or evacuation drill because we have to be able to communicate instructions immediately and quickly.

Highlighting 8th Grade
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to briefly visit each 8th grade advisory group. Our 8th grade scholars are beginning their days being mentored by outstanding advisors, but they are also participating in an incredibly strong advisory program. I witnessed team building and sequential circles. In Ms. Fofana and Mr. Moncada's classroom, I witnessed Khadijah lead the whole group while Mike confer with scholars one-to-one. I witnessed laughter shared by both scholars and advisors.
Throughout the day, I observe a team that is "one band, one sound" when it comes to the end-of-class "1-2-3-4" shared routine. As I open doors, I hear the count, and I also hear teachers reiterate over and over "behind your chair until the music starts."
STEM Friday
Today, our school community will experience its first STEM Friday. Our STEM Team will see each class for an extended time, providing more time for hands-on activities and reflection. Our Humanities Team will have the morning for extended and team-based professional development.

Yesterday morning, during the Daily Huddle, I asked members of our school community, "Which scholar has made the strongest first impression?" Needless to say, we were nearly late to open the doors because the list of scholars was long. At this halfway point of our first full week of school:
Which scholar has made the strongest first impression on YOU?
Today, I encourage you to write that scholar a note - whether it be on a post-it or a card - and call their parent or guardian with a "Good News Phone Call."
Speaking of good news: Each day, Ms. Lee prints out a schedule for Aneysha B., and each day Aneysha B. carries her schedule from class to class. Thank you for making a difference, Ms. Lee!

As a continuation from yesterday, a reflection on Friday, I also visited Mr. Decker and Mr. Hardy's class during which scholars wrote a note to self, to be read again when they graduate from middle school. The seating chart was posted as they entered the classroom, and scholars took turns selecting books.
In two classrooms, both Ms. Perez's and Mr. Moncada's, I observed an effective routine for the beginning of class. Both teachers stated their expectations, narrated three scholars meeting their expectations, and corrected other scholars until the class was meeting their expectations. With Ms. Perez, scholars created a graph to describe themselves, and the learning target in Mr. Moncada's class was, "I can identify internal and external aspects of my identity."
Overall, it was inspiring to see scholars in all grades and all subjects explore their identity through various means and various subject matters.
6th Grade
Today, 6th grade scholars will travel in two cohorts, "Medgar Evers College" and "NYU." Class rosters and the schedule with room and teacher assignments have already been communicated and shared.
Monday, September 11, 2023
The Daily Huddle
On Friday, I had the opportunity to visit at least 20 minutes of instruction for each one of our cohorts. I will share half of "The Highlight Reel" today and the other half tomorrow:
Ms. Gonder's learning target was, "I can begin to form positive relationships with my peers through an activity and class reflection." With Ms. Gonder, she asked scholars:
- What do you value?
- What could you not live without?
Scholars made progress towards this learning target through a unique shoe activity.
Ms. Rollins and Ms. Minaya facilitated a "Footloose" math game through which scholars completed entry-level math problems. Their classroom environment is an exemplar.
The beginning of Ms Fofana's class was productive because she had a seating chart posted as scholars entered and, within minutes, engaged scholars in the "Do Now" through which they activated prior knowledge. Her learning target was, "I can work with my group to evaluate the different perspectives involved in the lunchroom fight suspension report."
With Ms. Wlazelek and Ms. DiClaudio, our scholars participated in a "Book Tasting." Ms. Wlazelek stated her expectations, narrated three scholars meeting her expectations, and quickly corrected scholars not meeting her expectations. A scholar, during the book tasting and commenting on Elizabeth Acevedo's novel said, "I think this quote represents the versatility in women and the power of that versatility." If you're drawn to this reflection, read "Clap When You Land."

The Daily Huddle
On a normal day, I'll send an early morning email celebrating the day's birthdays, but yesterday wasn't a normal day. Yesterday, I began my day as a mom to Easton (11), Greyson (8), and Gus (8), and walked them to their first day of school. They were ready to go, complete with their backpacks on and lunches packed at 5:15 a.m., so while our morning was filled with boredom busters, they reminded me of our impact, as they talked nonstop about their teachers.
First, and foremost, Mr. Greenspan and Carmen in 6th Grade had a birthday yesterday. Don't tell him that I suggested this, but I've heard Mr. Greenspan had a milestone birthday yesterday.
As a preview to the weekly "Highlight Reel," I celebrate the following:
- Yesterday, a 7th grade class transitioned to Physical Education from the 3rd Floor and were louder than we'd like in a shared space. Their newly minted Gym teacher, Mr. Fox, calmly said, "No, we're going to try it again." He said these words without emotion or frustration. The second time his class attempted this transition, they did so quietly in our shared space.
- This week, to help our school community transition to a new year and, admittedly, bathroom times, I worked from the 2nd floor hallway. A few of many highlights included an 8th grade student who said, "Miss, thank you for hiring a really good art teacher. She's so nice, and we really needed that."
- Ms. DiClaudio and Ms. Wlazelek led an amazing lesson during which scholars created their 6-word memoirs. Our oldest kids in the building demonstrated vulnerability and also showed us they're still kids, as they proudly showed off their work.
Team, today we welcome a new member of our school community, Mr. Sheffield. Grant will be Moncada's co-teacher in 6th and 7th grade math. Thank you, as always, for your warm welcome of him into our school community.
Plan for Friday, September 8
On Friday, September 8th, we will have a shortened schedule, with our Humanities and STEM rotation commencing Friday, September 15th. The plan for this afternoon is:
- Week of September 11th Overview and Advisor Co-Planning Time in Room 207 from 2 to 2:30
- School Safety Procedures in Room 207 from 2:30 to 3
- Standards Based Grading Overview in Room 207 from 3 to 3:30

Yesterday, we completed the Reading portion of our NWEA MAP assessments and today, we will complete the Math portion of our NWEA MAP assessments. Each year, we assess our scholars using the NWEA MAP assessment three times per year. These assessments provide one of many glimpses of where our scholars are at academically and their growth over the course of an academic year. During the 2022-23 academic year, our scholars - in all grades and all subjects - shattered national norms for growth and some previous school records for growth. Most notably, our English Language Learners made, on average, between two and three years of growth in Reading and/or Math.

The Daily Huddle
Since elementary school, it is rare that I am able to get a good night's rest the night before the first day of school. Unlike me, I hope you are arriving at school rested and, similar to me, I hope you are overwhelmed by the excitement and hope of a new year. Today, several scholars will begin their journey at St HOPE. We are thrilled, honored, but also humbled to be a part of that journey.
Today, as a school community, we will teach and already begin to reinforce various classroom-based and shared school routines. A common request you will hear is, "Miss (or Mr.), can I go to the bathroom?" While there are 4 teachers in each classroom, today is a great day to teach and reinforce this routine. As a reminder, the 3rd Floor - the "top" floor at St HOPE - may use the bathroom at the top of the hour (:00-:29). During that time, folks will be posted in the 2nd floor hallway directing them to the student bathroom. If a scholar asks to fill up their water bottle or get water, there is a water fountain on the 2nd floor. The bathroom time still applies for these requests.
Staff Lounge
For the moment, Room 208 is our Staff Lounge. The staff lounge provides a student-free place to work and rest. When everyone receives their master key, this room will remain locked to ensure it is room only for teachers. In addition to providing a student-free place to work and rest, there are Nespresso pods, snacks and other items that you are free to take.
Please bring a picture of your loved ones, pets, etc. and post it to the bulletin boards.
This Afternoon
This afternoon, after we are all present for dismissal at 12:30 and after we set aside time for lunch, departments will meet at 1:30 in the rooms communicated by the department leads. At 2:15, everyone will gather in Room 310 to receive an overview of Returning Student Orientation, with a debrief outside Room 111 at 3:15.

The Daily Huddle
Today is our final day together without our scholars. Our classrooms and our hallways, by the end of the day today, must be ready for our scholars. Today, departments and grade teams will meet, and we will learn how to effectively use Go Guardian, a requirement for any classroom using a computer. Finally, we will review the "Minute By Minute" to prepare for tomorrow.
Beginning tomorrow, you will implement various shared school routines, both the routines reviewed by Ms. Perez and other St HOPE-isms. Over the next week and a half, I will review these, a few at a time, and continue to review these at various times throughout the year.
Bathroom Times
The 3rd Floor - the "top" floor at St HOPE - may use the bathroom at the top of the hour (:00-:29), and the 2nd Floor - the "bottom" floor at St HOPE - may use the bathroom at the bottom of the hour (:30-:59). Only one scholar may leave a classroom at a time, so each classroom will have a "bathroom list." Scholars may not use the bathroom outside of these times except for rare emergencies. A pass, distributed later, is required to travel to and from the bathroom.
Emergency Supply Needs or Bathroom Breaks
While emergency supply needs should be rare, occasionally, life happens and you might find yourself short a few copies or needing a box of tissues. If this occurs, please reach out to your "teacher buddy" first or your direct supervisor, if your "teacher buddy" is not available, via text or email. Please do not email any of the "group" email addresses. A student may never be sent to run an errand for a teacher, even with a pass.
Similarly, if you require a bathroom break during one of your teaching periods and have a co-teacher, please step out. If you do not have a co-teacher, please reach out to your "teacher buddy" first or your direct supervisor, if your "teacher buddy" is not available, via text or email. Please do not email any of the "group" email addresses.
As an added clarification, in co-taught classes, the co-teacher should step out only for these occasional emergency situations. Daily planning needs (copying, grading, etc.) should not occur during scheduled co-taught classes.

The Daily Huddle
Today and tomorrow are our final days together without our our scholars. Our classrooms, by end of day on Tuesday, need to be ready for our scholars. Over the next few days, we'll have time to plan our New Student Orientation Lessons, and we'll also have time to meet with our grade teams. More important, we'll have time to set our classrooms and routines for the 2023-24 academic year.
My forever mentor equated the beginning of the year for teachers to preparing jello. The days leading up to the beginning of the first day with kids are our opportunity to place the ingredients in the jello, and the first day of school marks the day when we place the jello in the refrigerator and let it set.
Today also marks the day the first day that you'll receive "The Daily Spark" in the morning rather than in the evening. Each day, I'll include a video with "The Daily Spark." On Wednesday through Friday, there won't be a set theme. Videos will be a combination of "Ted Talks" and other clips. However, Mondays and Tuesdays will have set themes. Mondays will be "Music Mondays." I entered teaching as a music teacher, and I had no aspirations of ever becoming a Principal. I entered teaching as a music teacher and wanted to retire a music teacher, dreaming of a retirement when current and former students would gather together in song. During my first few months as a teacher, I'd comment to others, "I can't believe this is my job. I love what I do." On Mondays, I'll share music with you. Some Mondays, it'll be music that you can listen or close your eyes to, and other Mondays, it'll be music that you can watch. You're also welcome to tune out Music Mondays if music isn't your thing. I've designated Tuesdays as "Ted Lasso Tuesdays."
Today, in addition to welcoming Music Mondays, we welcome Ms. Marcellino, our Art Teacher. In 2001, Ms. Marcellino graduated with a BFA and began working as a HS Art Teacher at St. Catharine Academy. Cassie started her family and also earned her MA in Art Education, and she spent several years teaching "art on a cart" and substitute teaching. Ms. Marcellino's goal at St HOPE is to engage her students and introduce them to various media, artists, and genres. She's grateful to be a part of St HOPE and looks forward to creating lasting relationships with colleagues and students.
