Letter from the Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
As Thanksgiving approaches, I wanted to share how thankful the Lions Park staff is to work with you and your children. We appreciate working in a community that values education and partners with us to support academic, social and emotional growth. We have enjoyed the conversations with many of you at parent and teacher conferences and look forward to seeing the rest of you next week. Your support enables us to most effectively help your children to reach their goals.
Today we are sending home the first trimester report cards with all students. When talking with your child about his or her report card, it will be a more meaningful conversation if the focus is not entirely on the numbers and letters. You may want to focus on highlighting areas of strength and opportunities for growth. Goal setting is a good way to help children take ownership of their own learning. When discussing strengths, you may ask your child what actions on his or her part contributed to successes. When discussing areas for growth, you could ask your child to brainstorm things he or she could do to improve. When I was teaching fifth grade, my students would frequently say things like "study more". While this is a good response, it is not specific enough to be useful. I used to encourage students to think of concrete ideas, such as making flashcards for vocabulary words.
As has been shared in previous newsletters, Lions Park School typically attends the Village of Mount Prospect Veterans Day ceremony at Lions Park Recreation Center. This will be held on a Saturday this year, but all Lions Park students and staff are still invited, and our chorus will be performing. The ceremony will be on November 11, at 10:30 a.m. Please join us if you can. We will also have veterans visit our school next Friday to do presentations for each grade level. We are excited to recognize Veterans and teach students about their contributions to our country.
After next week, our students will have a week off of school. I hope your children enjoy this opportunity for more time to rest, do things they enjoy and spend time with loved ones. We look forward to welcoming all students back on Monday, November 27th.
Warmly,
Katie Kelly
Principal
