EdCamp Professional Development

On January 13th we will team up with Jackson School to participate in an EdCamp style professional development day. All teachers will meet at Jackson at 2:30. There we will introduce the concept of an EdCamp and explain the sessions. After the short introduction, staff will participate in two sessions on a topic of their choice.

EdCamps, often referred to as an "unconference", are growing in popularity in education around the nation. The basic tenets of an EdCamp are:

  • Free
  • Open to everyone
  • Created by participants on the day
  • Sessions facilitated by anyone
  • Reliant on the “law of two feet” that empowers everyone to find session that meet their needs
  • Vendor-free events

We will do our best to replicate this powerful practice in our collaboration time with Jackson. We will discuss the session topics at our staff meeting on Wednesday, January 6th.

Adult Crossing Guard Appreciation Week January 11th-16th

Attached below is a proclamation from the State of Wisconsin declaring next week Adult Crossing Guard Appreciation Week. I am not sure if we have done anything in the past, but I do know that we owe appreciation to Janel, our school crossing guard and Steve Timm who volunteers to help students crossing on 6th street. Please consider having your class participate in some of the simple activities listed on the file. If you have other ideas of how we can show our appreciation let me know.

PTO Meeting January 14th

The January PTO Meeting will feature a presentation from Officers Dana Fischer and Hang Lor, School Resource Officers in the SASD Middle Schools. Their presentation topic will be on the topic of Internet Safety. The meeting is in the IMC from 6:30-8:00 pm.

A few years ago one of my favorite authors, Jon Gordon, shared some thoughts on New Year's Resolutions. His premise (described in the video below) was that resolutions are often broken, but choosing "one word" to focus on for the year can be transformational.

My family and I have joined in the last few years and it has become a tradition. I have also used it successfully as motivation for middle school students. There are a few links below if you are interested.

If not, the video is great reminder that the school year is a marathon and for us to remember each day we have an opportunity to change the world.
