Description:
Traditional history classes may conjure up images of memorizing dates and facts, but today's social studies classroom has evolved into a dynamic, thought-provoking, and interdisciplinary learning environment. This workshop invites parents to take a closer look at how social studies education has transformed to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.
Participants will have a better understanding the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and gain insight into the comprehensive framework that shapes students' social studies education. Attendees will discover how the NJSLS foster critical thinking, civic engagement, and global awareness. Participants will also explore the exciting topics and themes covered in contemporary social studies classes, from global citizenship and cultural diversity to historical inquiry and digital literacy. Attendees will experience firsthand the innovative teaching methods and technologies used in the modern social studies classroom and will learn how teachers are fostering creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Jamie Carvalho, Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Alcohol & Drug Counselor, and co-founder of Cairn Psychotherapy Group in Florham Park, NJ. will be presenting to parents of students in grades 7-12 on current drug trends and signs/symptoms of drug abuse and the differences between medicinal uses of certain substances and self-medication will be discussed. Additionally, parents will be given strategies on how to explore these topics with their children and how to seek support, if needed.
