A Note from Our Principal
Welcome back! Our 1st-5th grade students and staff had a great start to the school year this week and we are excited to have a full school next week when our kindergarten students join us. After I sent my welcome letter out to families in August, we had additional staff changes. We welcomed Carol Burton as our new music teacher. She comes to North Beach with many years of experience leading vocal music groups and musical theater. Rett Hartmann made the decision to remain full time in Cashmere with his family, so we also have welcomed a new P.E. teacher. Frank Willis has joined our staff, moving here from North Beach School District!
A reminder for families interested in advanced learning opportunities. The window for referring your child for advanced learning testing is open through September 23. Information about this process can be found at https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/advanced_learning .
Have a wonderful weekend!

From the office
Please be sure to go onto the Source to update your students information. Steps to do this were in your students 1st day packets. Most importantly, your email that you use to set up the Source, must be the same email we have for contact at school.
Thank you and welcome back!

Counselor’s Corner
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! For those of you who are new to the North Beach
community, my name is Alysa Reid, and I am thrilled to be the part-time counselor at North
Beach. I am here all day on Tuesdays and Thursdays and mornings on Wednesdays.
Working in conjunction with other North Beach staff members and families, my role is to
support students in reaching their full potential. My goal is for each student to have a positive
school experience. If you have concerns about your student, please contact me at: (206) 252-
1535 or by e-mail at arreid@seattleschools.org. I work with students in classrooms, in small
groups (focusing on issues such as social skills, impulse control, emotion management,
separation/divorce, managing anxiety and grief) and individually as needed and am available to
consult with parents.
I eat most of my lunches with students in small group “lunch bunches” as a way to learn names and get to know our students better. I will be eating with all Kindergarteners and new 1 st -5 th graders in small groups over the next few weeks.
Please note that school counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling services.
However, I am available for crisis and brief, solution-focused individual counseling. If your child or family is in need of more intensive or on-going services, I am happy to share community
resources with you.
I look forward to another great year ahead! Please let me know how I can help.
Welcome from the PTA
To new and returning families, you are an essential part of what makes North Beach a wonderful community. Parent volunteers contribute an extraordinary amount of time and resources to the school, and every bit helps. If you have 10 minutes, an hour, or more, you can make North Beach a better place for all. If you’re interested in learning more how the PTA supports the school, please consider attending our first meeting on Tuesday, September 10, at 6:30 pm. I hope to see you there. –Suzanne Hurley, president@northbeachpta.org
PTA Spotlight on Volunteers
Over the summer we had a slew of volunteers helping to get the school ready for a great year. Because of our dedicated volunteer garden waterers—led by Beth Carman—we donated over 15 pounds of food to the Ballard food bank! Amy Stone led a group of painting parents—Matt Newcomb, Jean McCarthy, and Amy Wathey—who beautified the walls outside the lunchroom. Tor Bjorklund refurbished the reader board (the sign outside). We had lots of help stuffing first-day packets and organizing school supplies—Beth Carman, Charlie Davis, Cynthia Eade, Suzanne Hurley, Pauline Jones and daughter CC, Karin LaBelle, Beka Olson and daughter Sadie, Kerry Sedivec, and Cheryl Smith. Sara Easterly and daughters Violet and Olive helped provide lunch for teachers and staff. Rebecca Mongrain and Chantel Frizzell updated our newsletter and website. The PTA Board met over the summer to plan the PTA’s activities and goals for the year. Thank you all!
Room Parents: We Need Your Help!
Have you wanted to help at school but just wasn't sure how? Here is your chance! Sign up to be a room parent today! You get the opportunity to make a major impact in the community of your child's classroom. Not sure if you want to do it alone? Ask another parent to partner with you.
The principal duties of the room parent are:
- Coordinate class Halloween party and Valentine’s Day party
- Organize classroom based Auction contribution
- Teacher appreciation and/or year end gift for the teacher
- Welcome families new to North Beach throughout the year
- Classroom point person for the online directory Konstella (and utilize it for communication, signups, etc.)
The room parent is a liaison between the teacher and the parents. This means different things to each teacher; duties vary by class and may include items not mentioned here, such as Scholastic Book orders, field trips, etc.
Interested? Contact Tara Nessan at tara.nessan@me.com with questions or to sign up.
Comfort Kits Needed
At North Beach, we like to be prepared in the event of an emergency. Part of our plan includes creating a Comfort Kit (student emergency kits) for each student in the building. We will store these in bins in each classroom. They will be used for emergencies only. At the end of the year, we’ll send them home with your child. Please follow the directions closely.
Place your child’s supplies (more information below) in a 1 Gal Ziplock Bag and label the front using a sharpie with the following information:
Child’s Name: _______
Room #: ________
Emergency Contact Name _________
Phone #__________
Supplies should include one days worth of non-perishable food (no nuts please) with a family picture and note from parents along with a stocking cap and a pair of mittens. THE PTA WILL PROVIDE A SPACE BLANKET AND WATER. Everything, except for the water, must fit in the ziplock bag. Please let your teacher or Rebecca Mongrain (communications@northbeachpta.org know if you are unable to provide the items for your bag. Label the bag and return to your child’s room, we will do the rest.

Well wishes from a former North Beach P.E. teacher:
Hi North Beach Families! As the school year begins I wanted to wish you all the best! As many of you know, I got married this summer and have now officially moved to Cashmere, WA. I am excited for this new adventure but at the same time so sad to be leaving such an incredible team of students, parents & staff who make North Beach the very best school for which to work during the past 18 years! I will be substitute teaching in the Leavenworth/Cashmere/Wenatchee areas this year but am also on the Seattle School District substitute list for times that I am back in town, so hopefully I'll still get a chance to roam the hallways of North Beach in the near future.
I didn't want to miss the opportunity to say THANK YOU for helping make my time at North Beach such an incredible experience. I count it a true blessing to have had such a rich and fulfilling experience during my time teaching at North Beach. Each of you will be dearly missed!
