Second Step Lesson Information
This week your student participated in two Second Step lessons. This unit is particularly important as we have seen an increase in students being unkind to one another. Please help your student and our school by keeping the conversation going at home.
7th Grade Students:
Lesson 8: What Is Harassment?
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to recognize harassment and tell how it’s different from bullying.
Question:
Talk to your child about an example of harassment you heard about, or—if you’re comfortable—something you experienced. Ask your child how this is different from bullying.
Lesson 9: What Is Sexual Harassment?
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to recognize the difference between sexual harassment and flirting so they can make informed decisions about how to respond.
Question:
Remind your child that it's important that they tell you if they experience sexual harassment. If you feel comfortable doing so, share an example of sexual harassment you or another person has experienced and how you or the other person dealt with it.
8th Grade Students:
8th Grade Students:
Lesson 8: Understanding Bullying
Summary:This week’s lesson will help your child examine common beliefs about bullying and harassment. They will begin to gain a perspective on how their opinions compare to those of others.
Question:
Ask your child what they think enables bullying and harassment. Encourage a conversation about why bullying and harassment still happens.
Lesson 9: Social Factors that Contribute to Bullying
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will consider other people’s attitudes and beliefs about bullying and harassment, as well as their own.
Question:
Share your thoughts and feelings around bullying and harassment with your child. Find out where you and your child agree and disagree and have a respectful discussion.

From Our Nurse's Office
Illness - 'Tis the season:
Flu season is here! We have already seen many cases of Influenza A. Please take note of body aches, fatigue, sore throats and coughs. If a student is positive for the flu, they will be required to stay home for five days to minimize the spread. Help protect your students by encouraging decent bedtimes, adequate hydration and good nutrition. As always, wash hands frequently and stay home if you are not well.
For illness in general, students must be vomit and fever free without the aid of fever-reducing medicines for 24 hours. If they have been diagnosed with strep, they must be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
Texting Students:
As a reminder, If your student texts you to come home and has not been seen by the nurse, it is not automatically excused. Please remind your student to visit the nurse’s office if they are not feeling well.
If your student has texted you, please call me! I’m always happy to help 913-993-0407
Hearing Screening:
Hearing screening has been rescheduled for December! All seventh grade and new eighth grade students will be screened. You will be notified if your student has any hearing issues and needs further evaluation. Please notify the nurse if you would like to OPT OUT of hearing screening.
Changes of Clothing:
Please have your student bring a change of clothing. They should have plenty of room in their locker to keep backups. Accidents happen and unfortunately, the nurse’s office is running out of clothes.
