7th Grade 3rd Quarter Assessment Reports Emailed Tonight
I think these reports best capture your child's growth and achievement in band. Research has shown that the best assessment is intrinsic - meaning that if they "own" it, they might do something about it. Mostly, I found that your kids are right on with their assessment. You will find my comments at the bottom of the page. I think this intrinsic, narrative, reflection based assessment is much more informative than just a number. With that said, you will see a number on the report card for band....focus on what you read in the assessment report you get tonight! It is much more accurate...and most importantly, it comes from your kids!
Kallan Engleson has been accepted to the 2016 Middle School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. Kallan is recognized with this honor and Carnegie Hall performance opportunity as a result of her demonstrated musical accomplishments and successful audition recording.
The Middle School Honors Performance Series was created to showcase accomplished individuals by allowing them to study under masters in New York City and perform in the celebrated venue, Carnegie Hall. Through a selective application process, the Honors Performance Series brings together skilled middle school instrumentalists and vocalists from schools across the world for a special Carnegie Hall performance.
Kallan will perform in the exclusive Honors Junior Performance at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, June 25, 2016, under the direction of world-renowned conductors. She will attend a Broadway Show, see famous sites, and experience the excitement of New York City. The trip will include a celebration of her accomplishments at the Junior Finalist Celebration in Times Square
Kallan plans to do hold a recital to help raise funds for this trip. Congratulations Kallan!
Summer Band Opportunities!
We would like to encourage Sun Prairie Middle School Band students to consider participating in a summer band opportunity such as one of our area music camps or our Summer School Jazz Band or Concert Band. We feel any of these opportunities offer a tremendous experience for students both musically and socially. Summer camps are a great way to keep playing, meet new friends, and work with an expert on your own instrument.

· The Best Band Camp Around!
· There are a variety of band camps in the area and across the state. The UW-W band camp is exceptional and highly recommended by Mr. Gleason and Mrs. Haraldson.
· If you would like information on other camps, just let us know (but this is the best!)
Many camps have a commuter option, which reduces the cost of attending quite a bit. Check the web sites for details. Students returning from camp rave about the great time they had. They learn an incredible amount of information in a short period. The instructors are eager to share their knowledge and love for music. Camp is a great experience and we highly recommend it for all our students. Follow this link to go directly to the UW-Whitewater Band Camp Site:

Spring Band Concert (May 10)
Our final concert of the year is always amazing! It will be held in our beautiful Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Sun Prairie High School. This concert is significant for a few reasons:
1) All of the PMMS Bands are in the same concert!!
2) We do the world premiere of a new work written for us! This year it is "Rock Music" by Alex Shapiro written for our 7th grade band. The 7th Grade portion of the concert will focus on an "Earth" Theme this year!
3) We get to celebrate another great year and take a look back at some great accomplishments.

"Rock Music" Is In Our Hands!
I think composer Shapiro said it best when she wrote:
ROCK MUSIC is possibly the very first geo-electroacoustic minimalist band piece: it has no melody, and no rhythm. It's conceptual and atmospheric, using textures of instruments, voices, and rocks to weave a wind band into a piece of sonic fabric stretched across linear time.
In this geo-electroacoustic piece, the music slowly crawls, melts, and scrapes over a sonic landscape in random, irregular ways: much as the glaciers carved the world we know.
To hear the work and learn more about the composition, simply go to our webpage and look for "Rock Music": http://www.spbb.org/patrick-marsh-7th-grade-band.html
