Inclement Weather
The Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) 2018‐19 school calendar includes two make‐up
days to address school days missed due to inclement weather. In addition to these days,
GCPS also has the option of making up days missed due to inclement weather using Digital
Learning Days. Should a decision be made to cancel school, students, parents, and staff will
be notified via SchoolMessenger if school will be closed or if the day is a Digital Learning Day. Since inclement weather might be in the forecast for this weekend, please check your SchoolMessenger, GCPS Facebook page, or the local news for updates. If school becomes a Digital Learning Day, then the work students will complete will be found on their e-class page. Their student number and password is located on their orange folder. Students should know how to log on because we do this daily in reading groups.

Literacy Learning
In reading, we will be reading gingerbread stories. After reading, we will review different skills such as identifying key details and main idea, identifying the character, setting, and events in a story, and reviewing ongoing skills such as book handling skills, the role of author/illustrator, etc. Teachers continue to emphasize the importance of reading for meaning and using the picture to support understanding.
When reading with your child at home it is important to talk with your child about what they notice in pictures. Pictures have meaning and can help to increase your child's comprehension of the story. Ask your child to predict what will happen next and what clues make them think what they are thinking.
Please make sure your child continues to read their sight words. Sight words can be put on index cards and need to be read quickly. Knowing sight words will help your child be able to read quickly "on the run" and increase comprehension.
Finally, as the holiday break approaches, please encourage your child to continue reading at home. Students will benefit from reading and listening to quality literature. The county libraries have excellent resources as well as using the online resources on your child's e-class page.
Math Memo:
Students are expected to be able to build numbers to 20 using double ten frames and cubes and understand place value (tens and ones). Student are encouraged, but are not required, to write a number sentence to show that "15 is one ten and 5 more" can be written as 10+5=15.
Also, please practice coins with your child! He/she must be able to correctly identify the coins by name and value. Use the study guide attached to practice. Try printing it, out, cutting the boxes apart, and playing coin memory with the cards!
Students will focus on learning about shapes after the holiday break. They will be learning about two-three dimensional shapes such as cones, cubes, and spheres, how to compose and decompose shapes as well as learning vocabulary words such as faces, vertices, angles, flat, solid, quadrilateral, etc. Students will be encouraged to look for shapes in the world and use number sense to explain what they notice about shapes. It is very important that students begin to explain their "math thinking" by producing responses using numbers, words and pictures.
