The Antebellum Reform Movement

antebellum reform movements
in the 1820's and so forth, there needed to be changes in this country of ours; such as how in-prisoned and mentally ill people were treated, education systems, the abuse of alcohol, and the need for women to be given equal rights. this is known as the antebellum reform movement!
Mental Hospitals
they were getting beaten brutally, caged, lashed into obedience. Dorothea Dix took a stand and brought the attention to the people. she helped five hospitals in america and pleaded human rights in america.
Prisons
getting arrested would be terrible during these times. it was unfair because, every prisoner was together meaning that anything could happen when you put someone nice with someone who's life is nothing but sin. luckily "debtors prison was abolished and prisons focused more on rehabilitating prisoners.
Public Education
in these time periods only the wealthy could afford education. then whats the point in having a country when only a number of people are educated? thankfully for Horace mann, who gave us tax supported schools with required attendance.
Alcohol Abuse
it was said that alcohol was the reason for societies problems. therefore the american temperance society got many people to reduce their alcohol use. because of this, many states banned alcohol itself.
women's rights
Elizabeth cady stanton was a woman who demanded rights to vote (suffrage). they also declared equality between men and women, also known as the declaration of sentiments.this all was overshadowed by a bigger reform movement, abolitionism
abolition of slavery
out of everything in the reform this!, the abolition of slavery was the most decisive issue.this issue contributed with the civil war.
